Description
Bethlem Meagles, like all children, is a diabolical little monster filled with evil. It's not his fault. He was born in 1885 with⦠an affliction. The child of the downtrodden couple of Mot and Anomia Meagles, something wasn't right about their baby since birth. The pregnancy itself left Anomia terminally ill, and she died in misery in 1887. The boy himself was an odd one, screaming bloody murder, destroying the house, and speaking in tongues. It became such a hassle to keep up with that his father went insane and killed himself in his delirium. Left alone, the demon child fell into the clutches of a mysterious and murderous creature calling itself Jack the Ripper. A conspiracy was afoot, and the only thing that could stop it was Mot, reconstituted in death as a reaper. Sadly, Bethlem did not survive very long in the process, but Teena, the same specter that gave Mot a second chance, performed the same spell on the boy so that father and son could have a second chance together. As I said, the boy is just the worst. Though no longer bound by a demonic curse, he's still a little weirdo who likes to scare the pants off people with all sorts of ghoulish and unsettling pranks. Sometimes he just likes to stand at the end of long dark hallways, making that face, just because he can. It's all extremely alarming, especially to the reaper crew's newest recruit, Dawn Hewlett. As if her situation wasn't scary enough, here's this little monster actively out to stress her to her limits. Mot tries to mitigate his son's behavior as best he can, but I mean they're already dead. What else are you gonna do, dad? Ground him?
Design notes, I hate children. Okay that's not exactly a design note per se, but I find them creepy, gross, and annoying XD And I did my best to channel that into Bethlem's design. I actually took a lot of inspiration from the original costume designs used in the first stage productions of Peter Pan. Thematically, it seemed appropriate, and the raggedy tunics lent themselves well to the ghostly silhouette I was going for. Fun fact, I actually did design my own interpretation of Peter Pan for a D&D one off, but I'll share that some other time. Composition for Bethlem got away from me when I was first sketching this out, but I think I managed to pull it back together. Now I never have to look at gross creepy children again until I go to work tomorrow and some people decide it's a good idea to bring their screaming meat potatoes to the grocery store. Please stop, for the sake of us unfortunate workers who are forced to be there and take it for 8 hours.
