Description

The city of Rome was founded in 753 BC by a man named Romulus after he killed his twin brother Remus for the title of king.  Ever since Romulus took the throne, he had swept his army across the lands, conquering until Rome became a kingdom.  This made him a valuable ally to the power-hungry Templars, and a major target of the Assassins, who sought to save the citizens of Rome from Romulus’s tyranny.  They eventually managed to kill the king in 716 BC, and Numa Pompilius took the throne.  Numa became an ally to the Assassins due to his desire to restrain power and give more liberty and justice to the people of Rome.  Unfortunately, the Templars had killed Numa in 673 BC, and put their man, Tullus Hostilius, on the throne.

Hostilius carried on the conquest that Romulus had started.  Through brutal tactics, his military swept across the land to expand Rome’s lands, slaughtering innocents throughout their conquest.  He mostly did this using a Sword of Eden, a powerful Precursor weapon.  In 642 BC, the Assassins attempted to steal away the Sword, but Hostilius discovered them before they could escape.  During the ensuing fight, the Sword accidentally detonated, killing Hostilius and the Assassins fighting him.  The Assassins mourned their lost brothers, but celebrated the death of the tyrant.

The next two kings, Ancus Marcius and his successor, Lucius Tarquinius Priscus, placed their friendships with the Assassins.  They worked to return liberty to the people and take power from the Templars that wished to rule.  However, Priscus was killed by the Templars in 579 BC, and in his place they put Servius Tullius.  Tullius ruled with an iron fist for a while, but he eventually began to lean more towards the Assassins than the Templars, helping the poor civilians instead of the powerful nobles.  The Templars saw this, and they had him killed in 535 BC.  The Templars put his son-in-law, Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, on the throne.  Superbus was the most brutal of any of Rome’s kings, conquering the people around the kingdom and abusing them brutally.  The Assassins tried desperately to overthrow him, but they weren't able to do it alone.  Thankfully, they wouldn't have to.

In 509 BC, Superbus’s son, Sextus Tarquinius, raped an innocent girl named Lucretia.  This outraged the citizens of Rome, causing them to band together with the Assassins to finally rebel against the Templar tyrants and gain the liberty and justice they deserved.  This revolution, led by the Assassins, Lucius Junius Brutus, Lucius Tarquinius Collatinus, Publius Valerius Poplicola, and Spurius Lucretius Tricipitinus, resulted in the Templars being overwhelmed and driven out of Rome, including Superbus and his family.  The Roman Kingdom was no more.  The people founded a new system, the Republic, which the Assassins had managed to keep in check for a while.  Superbus eventually tried to conquer Rome again in 496 BC, but his army was defeated by the Assassins and he was killed.  The Roman Republic was there to stay.  Liberty was allowed to blossom again in Rome… for now.

Soon though, another ancient civilization would need liberating.  East of Rome was another country caught up in its own war.  Democracy and Monarchy were going toe to toe again, and the Assassins would be there to make sure that freedom and happiness wins the war.  And they'd soon have a new advantage, because they would soon have a new trick up their sleeves...
