Description

Hey guys, I'm back.  Yay ^^ Sorry for being late with this.  I know I said I'd be back on Friday, but stuff got in the way and I had to hold off for a couple more days But hey, at least I'm back now! ^^

And so here’s another scene from my AC fanfic, “Anthem”, this one being the part where Shay confronts William Henry Harrison at his home in North Bend and excommunicates him from the Templar Order on charges of corruption.

You actually know more about Harrison besides "the president who died in 30 days"?

Ye XD He's a big figure in Indiana history afterall, for better or worse

Are you from Indiana?

I've been researching, and apparently the 1840 election was one of the more modern campaigns. That being less about establishing policies and more about insulting the opponent

Ye I'm from Indiana ^^ We had a lot of major battles involving Harrison here during the War of 1812, and he was also our state's first governor so ye

Hm...I'm guessing for better or worse he's actually remembered there. Based on your fanfiction, I'm thinking you have a negative opinion on him. What are your thoughts on his VP/successor John Tyler, if any?

Also, I am interested in genealogy and I'm researching my own family tree. Did your family have interesting roots in this period of history, or other famous conflicts in American history?

Avapithecus In reply to Red-Jirachi-2 [2018-06-04 16:41:24 +0000 UTC]

He's remembered as an important figure here but... yeah most of us nowadays acknowledge he was really just a racist jerk and that's not cool at all XD

I don't really remember much about Tyler He didn't come up much in my research for these fanfics and he kinda just gets passed over in history classes.  If I remember correctly he was a supporter of the South and slavery and that's always a solid negative that automatically crosses a person off my list of people I like XD

Huh. As with genealogy, does your family tree have any interesting stories in American conflicts?

Yes actually ^^ My great (×7) grandfather was a Revolutionary War soldier named Jack Abbott.  He fought in the Battle of Eutaw Springs.  His granddaughter Priscilla was my ancestor whom I use as the protagonist in one of my fanfics.  Her family was hurt pretty badly by the Jackson campaign so she was an outspoken opponent of him.  Then her son James was my ancestor who participated in the Civil War.  He volunteered for the Union Army because according to one of his friend's journals, he was the type of guy who always had a smile and always wanted to make others smile regardless of race or gender or any of that stuff.  He fought at Vicksburg and reportedly never got any battle wounds over his 5 years of service

Very interesting!

I don't have any American ancestors(I'm from New Zealand and most of my family descends from the British Isles), though some of my family had military history. My paternal grandfather was an artillery mechanic during the Korean War, and his father and uncle were WW1 veterans. My paternal grandmother had an ancestor through her mother who was likely part of the Napoleonic War. And my maternal grandmother had a cousin who helped on the farm that ended up fighting in WW2 before being shot down over Germany. Over half a century later, she ended up meeting a woman who saw his plane be shot down

That's pretty interesting too

Two of my great grandfather's participated in the Pacific front during WW2.  The one on my dad's side got shot in the shoulder twice and the medics simply left them in because they weren't technically hurting his bodily functions.  So he got a Purple Heart medal and his wounds healed over the bullets.  They were still in his shoulder when he died decades later
Then my paternal grandfather got drafted into Vietnam but the experience traumatized him so much he forbid any of his kids or grandkids to ever enter the military and face the same horrors he did
In terms of foreign military history, a great great grandfather on my mom's side was an officer in the Hungarian army.  And I'm also a direct descendant of King Edward I so Scottish Wars of Independence are in my blood as well XD

My step-mom's dad is a Vietnam veteran.

In terms of famous ancestry, I have learned I am descended from Thomas More, who was the chancellor of Henry VIII before a falling out and execution because he was a vocal critic of his desire to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. Also descended from Edmund Beaufort, the Duke of Somerset and one of the notable players in the War of the Roses. This would also make me and my mother descended from King Edward III, and by extension Edward I

Considering he lived so long ago, I'm pretty sure a good portion of people with British descent shares Edward I as an ancestor, but I guess technically we are

I've been researching information about the presidents between Jackson and Lincoln, being the more obscure and often poorly thought of presidents. Apparently there's evidence that it wasn't pneumonia that got Old Tippecanoe, but typhoid fever. Also, Harrison's death is the start of Tecumseh's curse, the Curse of Tippecanoe or the Zero Year Curse. It's an old legend that states Tecumseh's shaman put a curse on the presidency, so that whenever someone wins the election on a year divisible by 20 they will die in office. William H Harrison(1840) died a month in, Abraham Lincoln(1860 and 1864), James A Garfield(1880), William McKinley(1896 and 1900) and John F Kennedy(1960) were all assassinated, Warren G Harding(1920) and Franklin D Roosevelt(1932, 1936, 1940 and 1944) passed away, and the curse was only broken with the near-miss of Ronald Reagan(1980). The only exception to this is Zachary Taylor(1848) who died of food poisoning 16 months in.

Ye I've heard of that legend lol.  Tecumseh is featured as an Assassin in one of my fanfics :V And the main character just kinda poisons Harrison during his inaugural speech XD

"I want my chocolate! And I want it now!"

Sorry, I just imagined that this Templar would be a little kid and the old man his father or grandfather

But this picture is really interesting, because the old man isn't that angry as the other one in the blue jacket.
I mean, he has a sword/saber in his hand!
And Shay just sits there and looks calm. D:
