Description Yes~ there is a third one, now. It's just to elaborate on some things (there's going to be a fourth one because this didn't cover everything).
These are mainly about creation and getting individuality into your pieces, understanding characters psychology, and learning to get innovative and different ideas about many things.

So, yeah.
=B Hopefully this will help even more people. I'm glad my ideas have been embraced so much.

'In fact, if you ONLY excel at English, I think that makes you a terrible writer'...I'm screwed then

Personal opinion. But I think the key to being a good writer lies in broadening your horizons and doing research, which perhaps isn't so much of a think to excel at but a skill to develop that will lead to higher creativity.

What do you mean by broadening your horizons and doing research? Does that mean do research on your stories?

Researching topics on which to write about, doing MORE research on those, making sure the facts in your stories line up, doing research in order to get inspired. Generally, if you want to write about something like 14th century life in Russia, you wouldn't go into it completely ignorant of the customs, social interactions, and technology of the time.
I find that most of my inspiration comes from reading academic articles, whether those be focused on science, philosophy, psychology, or something else, rather than from any novels I'm reading at the time. I do derive some inspiration from that, but, depending on the type of writer you want to be (especially with most of science fiction and some of fantasy), you need to be up to date on current breakthroughs in science in order to see the impact of those and be able to write on them. Either that or you need to make the reader just go along with it (think Iron Man), which is pretty hard to accomplish as they'll probably point out the flaws no matter how charming you make them. Granted, not all fiction is like that, but there's research necessary to basically every story.

*shivers* Oh yeah. Americans and Iranians are definitely different.

Sorry. I just had to say that. Anyways, yeah, I agree with a lot of the stuff here.

Oh my God, having not read my tutorials since I wrote them that comment lead to major confusion. Wow. hahaha I didn't even realize I'd made a comparison.
Iranians are actually pretty cool. Apparently their 'in-trend' is plastic surgery. Maybe not so different.

Thanks.

I kinda know why they like plastic surgery. They usually only do it on their face, I think.

And no problem.

Hmmm. Well, I think there are things everyone wants to fix, but I know I'm comfortable enough with myself that it doesn't appeal to me. Different things for different people, though.

I like your comments on innovation, they're so true! Though I like third person perspective- while first person is often more intimate, I think it's sometimes harder for inexperienced writers to distance themselves enough from it to give the character its own identity. Both have their ups and downs. There is second person, but...yeah. :P

avaunt In reply to EmCaCo [2008-08-07 00:30:24 +0000 UTC]

True enough. xDD That's more of a personal preference, since I'm annoyed with third right now and so many writers write shitty third-person stories and think that they're art because they're distant and arrogant. They all end up the same without conveying anything new. =B Of course, there are exceptions, but not usually when it comes to new writers or writers with their heads stuck up in their ass. << People just don't know how to write or connect with an audience and usually cover it up with third person.

And second person . . . xDDD
I think it'd be awesome if somebody could write a good second-person story. xP

The Choose-Your-Own-Adventure series are the only published second-person books I know of. They were fun, but I always died a hundred and fifty times before reaching a good ending. >:

Nice point on the character and culture bits :3 I'm just now doing a lot of work on the cultures/histories of my characters' races and why they are the way they are. And such. :3

... Tolkien is a perfect example of immersing yourself in the culture, as you put it. What with creating entire languages and races each with their own unique traits and outlooks.

(Random comment due to the fact I'm writing yet another paper on him.)
