Description
I suppose this could also be called something like "if humans had wings" or a similar idea, but since this knowledge came from my guardian demon, I kept the title as is.This tutorial-type anatomical drawing illustrates the bones of demon (or if you really prefer, angel-type) wings. My notes are self-explanatory, I hope!

I found your illustration of the demon wing bone structure very interesting. However would the being gain enough lift with the fulcrum of the wings set so far back? I was wondering if it would be plausible for a humanoid to have the wing socket set behind and below the arm socket on the side of the body?

A very interesting question! The way I understand it, the strength to fly comes more from the muscles of the wing's bones, not from the muscles near the socket.
To be honest I really don't think such large wings would physically work on humans, but then again we are talking about demons and angels and they aren't quite like us as far as bodily physics are concerned. They are a superhuman race of Gods and their bodies abilities differ from us mortals. I hate to drag in spirituality, but as I said this knowledge came from my guardian demon.
I hope this makes sense!

more or less, I am working on a fictional bestiary the explains the evolution of monstrous humanoids, and i am trying to think of a plausible explanation of how a humanoid could evolve wings. If you have any further advise you can offer it would be most appriciated

I really don't think it's possible for homo sapiens to adapt and evolve to have wings like is shown in this tutorial. I think if anything, we could evolve so taht our arms would be wings. But then of course we wouldn't have arms...

I really like this reference of the bone structure of Avian-type Humanoid wings. Its really good!
[You should really specify the type of demons you mean. I mean, I checked the commentaries down there and saw you were referring to the demons of the christian/jewish myths, but writing the ''demons DO NOT have those rubbery pteradactyl/dragon-type wings like most people wrongly think'' is incorrect unless you specify the type of Demon you refer to. I'm saying this to help, because when I read that, my eye twitched, though I took a breath and found out what you meant, cause it is kind of insulting to affirm everyone is wrong when you are using a very generalised name for something you specify so much without actually naming it properly. Hope this helps out somehow. Keep up the good work! ;D]

Thank you
I would rather not differentiate too much though, I said plain and clear that this knowledge came from my guardian demon who let me examine and draw his wings in a dream. To further specify, I mean the demons of the Ars Goetia. The 72 demons of Satan all have wings like most people envision on angels. Lesser demons, and demons from other ideals such as Eastern cultures, may differ.
But, since I am a Satanist and this is my drawing, I typed what I intended to say.

Yeah it does, it's thanks to my guardian demon that I was able to draw these wings. That's why the title is "Bone Structure of Demon Wings" thats what people keep asking me anyways... Srry I know it's confusing -_-

I mean the fact that you are a satanist really isn't important, and it seems like you just want attention. I can understand it - the dream and whatnot.
I was only warning you so you don't get flamers, but you seem to be fine with that so...yeah. Keep up the neat drawings!

There's no real "wrong" way to think about wings in art. It just depends on style and preference. I bet I would have just as much fun drawing rubbery wings on them as I would drawing actual wings of rubber. >.> Demons are really real in the first place. If you go to asia, many of the demons don't actually even have wings they just kinda fly (like son goku without the cloud). XD
Also, shouldn't there be two sockets since there's the arm AND the wing? I'm having a hard time trying to tell from the diagram >.>

AvrilDC In reply to Extrics [2010-12-28 02:54:37 +0000 UTC]
Well by demons I meant the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia. The demons of Satan, in other words.
The arm socket is still in the same place, the difference is what I termed the "jump cup process" which is that strange extension on the body of the scapula. It doesn't really look like a ball socket, but that is where the humerus of the wing rests, with many ligaments holding it in place.
I thought of colorizing the diagram to name a few things, would that make it easier to understand?

Oh, the fallen angels? Figures but I thought that idea was only created later a few centuries after the Bible
I see it now. I'm a bio student so you don't really need to color it for me. I've seen more than enough black and white anatomy diagrams. Thanks, this was helpful. I'm still trying to figure out how dragon shoulders are suppose to work.

AvrilDC In reply to Extrics [2010-12-28 06:56:18 +0000 UTC]
Not all demons are fallen angels either. The demons were the original Pagan gods wayyyyy before the Bible was even invented.
I'll be drawing one more diagram of how the ligaments hold the wing in place.
