Description LARGE FILE WARNING

What?! I uploaded something!
Well it's about time I finished this, right?

I'm sorry it took me so long to get all this put together. I had a hell of a time working with such a big file that it often crashed and I had to do some of the work over... OTL

I suppose this could also be called something like "if humans had wings" or a similar idea, but since this knowledge came from my guardian demon, I kept the title as is.

Thank you Andras

This tutorial-type anatomical drawing illustrates the anatomy of demon (or if you really prefer, angel-type) wings. My notes are self-explanatory, I hope!

Also, please note that some wings look more stylized if the demon or angel is represented by a certain animal (raven, owl, eagle, etc).

I'm working on rebuilding thisΒ  Β , and your tutorial was very helpful. Thank you for making such an in depth study of a fictitious creature.

Wanna say thanks. This little resource gave me a good inspiration for a practice sculpt on a female demon. Cheers !

This is SO AWESOME!!! So, in my favorite book series, The Daughter of Smoke & Bone Saga by Laini Taylor, there is this scene where a seraph (Basically an angel with wings of FIRE) is talking to another main character, and the seraph wraps his wings around them so they are just focusing on each other. I just realized that assuming this wing anatomy, doing that would really hurt for the seraph. Now, my question is: Would that actually hurt, if it is actually physically possible?

Amazing tutorial that shows the anatomy of wings
I like it a lot though the title made me think that it might have been a "how to draw" tutorial.
Anyway I learnt something so it's all good

Wow, this is awesome. You must have put some serious thought into this, not just to make it look awesome, but to think of something that could actually work.
The bone structure you've come up with is amazing, esp. the way the wings connect to the scapula. I tried to figure out a way myself, and failed (I suck at human anatomy. the bird part was much easier).
The extra long metacarpal bone and the seperated finger bones explain the great wing span needed to hold up a humanoid and curled wingtips, well not essentially neccissary but it'd be nice being able to wrap your wings around something.
The only thing that doesn't sit well with me is the muscles. The ones you depicted woud suffice in holding up the wings and move them, but they would be to weak to lift up a human. I guess you would need some really strong muscles to connect the wings to clavicula and sternum. One part could go over the shoulder, another run along the side to insert at the sternum.
These muscles would be needed to pull the wings down and hold them in place when gliding. Muscles to actually pull the wings up could be much smaller, because the air resistance would do the trick.
One last thought: Birds don't have a flight muscle that connects the metacarpus to shoulder or sternum. I think such muscle could be necissary here to stabilize the lenght of the wing.

So enough anatomy rant here. And let me say it again: this is awesome! I could never have come up with a way to connect a wing to an already occupied shoulder blade, and you just did it.
This is so cool!

Thanks very much for the thoughtful comment! Yes, I agree that more muscle for the shoulder joint would be needed, as well as opposing muscle groups attaching to the sternum or the anterior clavicle.

This gave me more of a bird's anatomy than how exactly to DRAW a wing.. maybe I was misled by the title ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

AvrilDC In reply to deideiblueeyez [2011-04-23 22:50:33 +0000 UTC]

It's not a step-by-step how to draw wings. It's the anatomy of wings that a humanoid creature would have and how it connects to the shoulder blades.

My belief is that once you understand the basic anatomy of body structures, it'll be much easier for you to draw.

In any case, I hope it helped you a little?
