WELCOME BACK TO SAUCEZ REVIEWZ: POKEPASTAS SERIES.
Pasta Name: Pokémon Dead Channel
Publish Date: November 6th, 2010
Description: After the protagonist had a long period of time of fun with their Pikachu named BRVR on the gamecube game Pokemon Channel, they went on to do other things in life for a few years. But eventually came back to the game after having some troubles in life and was greeted with a bloody mess.
Fun Fact: according to the author, BRVR is short for brother
Highlight: the textbox dialogue
Quote: "BRVR knows when you are lying." -game textbox
So my favorite part of the pasta is some of the textbox dialogues in the game, I think some of their delivery are a bit unsettling and well-done. unfortunately, they were the only good parts of the entire thing honestly. you know how I said in the description the author come back with a bloody surprise and mess? well speaking of messes... this was a SPOILED PASTA through and through. it's such a huge mess of a pasta. there is just so many things wrong with this pasta and it's hard to believe the popularity of this one next to other poorly aged pastas like Jeff the Killer, Clockwork, Squidward's Suicide, Sonic.exe, etc. I got to tell you not even my younger self liked this pasta back then either. The pasta suffers with so many cliches that have been done to death. It might've been one of the earliest pastas to do them, but it still doesn't mean it holds up well unlike BEN Drowned which did do the sort of formula correctly.
Not only was my biggest problem with pokemon dead channel was there was way too much blood and gore to the point where it feels more like a gore porn like Cupcakes, but it drags on in some parts for way too long. also it goes back and forth with being bloody and just depressing.
So let's talk about the story...
STORY:
Well it starts off with the author being an introvert at first with gaming but made some friends in high school abandoning her old games include pokemon channel.
Keep in mind I barely know much about pokemon channel, so I apologize if I get some game mechanics wrong.
But it starts off with BRVR giving the protagonist dirty looks and the delibird came to deliver the packages you'll find the delibird's presence to be very strange considered what you'll be reading later on in the story.
the package contains Pikachu TV Z which is the tv in the cover art I put, red wallpaper Z, and Pikachu doll Z which is the possessed pikachu plush I put in the cover art
~you'll find out later on why the doll is there, it's stupid
the tv had BLOOD
the wallpaper had BLOOD
and the pikachu dolls Z had guess what?
BLOOD
First of all, blood really isn't that scary. that's my issue with some of these pastas is the overuse of blood. blood and gore can be creepy if done right and it was important part of the story and/or it builds up to something, but for here, it's like it's just there just to be there.
so BRVR turns on the tv which starts dripping out BLOOD and it plays the fortune channel which goes nowhere with the chansey laughing. then, it plays the relaxation channel which is the one channel that has the game counting mareep jumping over the fence, only the pikachu doll Z's replaced the mareeps instead. Okay then...?
get used to the pikachu doll Z's
so BRVR turns around and the textbox asks "BRVR wants to know if you still love him. O Yes X No"
the author picks yes
Now, here comes what I think is remotely a decent part of the pasta. BRVR laughs maniacally and the textbox says "BRVR knows when you are lying." ngl that can be a bit unsettling. if only the pasta emphasized more on that, that would be better. it's predictable but decent at best.
Now, the pasta doesn't really seem that bad right? Well, here's when it REALLY goes downhill.
It's when BRVR goes outside of the house and the player was forced to follow them and outside of the house were BLOODY CORPSES of Pokemon. That just ruined the pasta right there.
And the author even puts a lot of detail on the corpses too with shredded faces, limbs torn off, and entrails are hanging out.
"BRVR wants to know if you like what he's done to the place?" Author says no rather than you know, turn off the game.
So BRVR does cannibalism on a Skitty corpses and throws it at the camera. And then we have BRVR eating fruit flowers with real Pikachu heads on it?
Um, what? Then BRVR casts a wicked smile at the author.
So they wait for the bus to virdian forest. OKAY, FIRST OF ALL, WHO'S DRIVING THE BUSES?! And why would they drive them to a bloody field of corpses? That goes back to delibird, why would he deliver to a house with bloody corpses around it? I'd nope on out of there
And so they get to virdian forest and its on fire as there are dead pokemon with charred black bodies and BRVR eats mushrooms that were bleeding. pokemon channel is up to gen 3 and foongus wasn't added yet. so would it be shroomish? they literally say bleeding mushrooms in the story. Maybe a shroom from paras? and pikachu doll z's gather other to play a haunting tone with bells
You see what I mean by this pasta is a mess? it's very inconsistent at times or things happen out of the blue.
Then they go to cobalt coast (the beach area) and take a guess guys. what's the setting like at the beach?
.
.
.
.
.
.
If you guessed blood water with floating corpses, you're correct. Trust me, I'm just summarize it because these scenes drag on for so long and it's a story. reading is supposed to be detailed with its story at times to make the reading experience interesting but the details here in this pasta don't make it interesting which is the issue.
so BRVR plays tic-tac-toe but instead of the usual stones, it was with entrails of dead pokemon that they were using as pieces for the tic tac toe game (wouldn't stones technically be body parts of rock-type pokemon especially onix?) BRVR won the game because the author was too sick to their stomach to focus on winning. here's an idea, turn the console off!
And they go fishing and for the bait, instead of a chocolate glazed donut in the actual game (wouldn't the donut get soggy and fall apart from the water anyway? xD) it was with a moldy brain as bait.
Warning - this part is a bit graphic and gruesome: they caught a dark purple Magikarp with foam coming out of their mouth and they were bleeding green acidic blood and the scales were scrapped away exposing muscles and flesh tissue with bones sticking out of its flesh and BRVR eats the Magikarp alive. The author couldn't believe their once best virtual friend was doing all of this.
Another commentary note: this is one of the "iconic" pokepastas out there, how? I don't know. also, unlike sonic.exe (it's still a terrible pasta and one of the worst overall) where it at least had some effort put into showing visuals and a playable rom hack, this one doesn't. I've even tried to search for a fan animation based on this pasta since it's so "popular" to try to see if it's better off shown visually and I have found nothing. I get it's a 3d pokemon game, but there's not even like an SFM animation of the pasta either. The closest thing I could find to a fan animation is one in that one stereotypical art style that a lot early teens seem to have, but it only covers part of the pasta.
So they go to mt. snowfall and there's frostbitten carcasses everywhere. Don't worry, there's a pokepasta involving a snowy mountain and frostbite that's a lot better than this trainwreck
And BRVR out of nowhere goes up to the stage where jigglypuff usually is and sings. They sang a depressing song that was considered surprisingly sad and beautiful to the author. afterwards, BRVR gave the most sorrowful, depressed, and utterly hopeless expression to the author.
Then they go to the Ruins of Truth, and BRVR lights up the place, and written on the walls and ceiling in BLOOD are help me, why? I must die, It's so cold, I'm so lonely, where is she? come back, why can't I die?
Not gonna lie, I did think having those sentences written on the walls and ceilings did work at first, but did it have to be written in blood though? Why not have it be just paint? Well this whole pasta has been about blood, so why not add more blood? xP
true or false tablet "My owner abandoned me. True or False?" Author realized it's just a game. BRVR isn't real. You now just realized that? They select yes as in they did abandon BRVR. BRVR looked sad and the textbox pops up and says "BRVR feels the same way about you" BRVR does one more wide sinister smile at the author as the textbox says "BRVR wants you to suffer the same way he did". The game turns off.
Now, get ready for one of the most ridiculous and bizarre endings in creepypasta history...
The author turned away and sitting on their desk... was a PIKACHU DOLL Z.
SHOCK ENDING... NOT! And that's what that Pikachu plush in the cover art is a reference to, the ending.
And surprisingly sonic.exe didn't do that ending first. this was written in 2010 while sonic.exe was written in 2011 but they both end in the same way with a bloody plush being right behind the author at the end.
So, yeah, it's a SPOILED PASTA and you all saw that coming.

Further thoughts:
First of all, let me mention how overused the pasta's formula is with pokepasta with the whole "pokemon becomes insane/depressed/desperate after a conflict or abandonment of their owner" and vice versa. there are so many pokepastas with this formula it's ridiculous I won't leave you (Loneliness the Eevee), Forever Mine (Skye the Shaymin), EEeEE, Tommy Boy the Flygon, PMD: Explorers Of Death, and so many more. Yeah it was one of the first pasta to do this formula, but that doesn't make it any better though.
Second, I really don't like how much BRVR goes between moods so abruptly like they have mood swings so badly, like angry, sad, smug, psychotic, bloodlust, and depressed. I honestly think their mood swings are like a slot machine and it randomizes what emotion BRVR should be in.
I honestly gotten more scared of my favorite villagers in the original animal crossing game scolding me for being gone for years than this pasta.
Speaking of the original animal crossing, someone in a discord server I'm in that I share these reveiws in pointed out that how can they even tell the details with the dead pokemon? the gamecube had some games with wonderful graphics like Melee, Super Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, and even Metroid Prime. and it had its share of games with no so great graphics that you could mistake them as a n64 game, pokemon channel is one of them and the original animal crossing game had not so great graphics but at least that game was great. So pokemon channel doesn't have very good graphics, so anyway how could the author tell the specific details with the dead pokemon and their entrails? especially the graphical magikarp?
Also, the pasta feels like it's constantly building up to something with such poor pay-off too.
Now compared to sonic.exe, I think they're both evenly bad. I can give sonic.exe a little credit for effort in the rom hack but it's still dumb and lazy and why have things from other games in there like kefka's laugh, earthbound music, and backgrounds from doom. sonic.exe is just boring and has little substance. and this pasta doesn't have any visuals to show and it drags on but there it did make me feel nauseous from some of the gruesome stuff and it may have a lot of substance but it's all poorly executed.
So we have two mediocre pastas now - digimon the lost movie (even though that was meant to be as an april fool's day joke) and pokemon dead channel. Which one would I say is worse? Well to be fair I give digimon the lost movie a little credit for at least being unintentionally hilarious, but still very cringy at the same time and according to you guys, the characters were way out of character. it's still bad but it's entertainingly bad and it's one you can't really take seriously while pokemon dead channel, well you can't take this one seriously either, but you can tell that you are meant to that this one seriously and it's still executed badly. digimon the lost movie can make me laugh and cringe while pokemon dead channel can make me nauseate and facepalm.
Also please don't shame the author because looking at the author's deviantart, they are aware on how poorly-aged and badly written their pasta is now, but they still have it up just for memories and to give access.
My VERSION:
I also had people in the discord servers throw out suggestions too. I will keep their names anonymous but credit to them if they are reading this.
So, one suggestion I have is obviously remove the blood and gore. Blood and gore can work if done correctly, but I have a better idea...
Not sure if my version would make it a fresh pasta but at least make it an improvement. How about instead of having bloody, dead bodies of pokemon, have there be NO OTHER POKEMON at all? Just the author and BRVR. It can give a feeling of emptiness. Have the atmosphere feel empty and deserted. I think some pastas like the Luna Game (despite the jump scares) did emptiness correctly to the point where there is like nothing in the environment it feels unsettling. Undertale also did this for when you do the genocide route where the "but nobody came" can be unsettling. Just have there be nothing and the place feel empty. The emptiness can indicate the other pokemon have abandoned. Have BRVR be overjoyed about their owner's return. But later show that BRVR is very desperate and doesn't want their owner to leave again. There's no Delibird delivering and nobody on the channels. But, because of the nostalgia trip with BRVR, they're in some huge denial and act like there are still pokemon there when there aren't just to try to keep the author entertained. It shows that BRVR has become desperate and psychotic because their owner is what they have left in their life. As for the textbox dialogue, again I wish the pasta emphasized more on them. Have them say "BRVR doesn't want you to leave them again, (The author's real name)". And the textbox dialogues get more constantly to indicate how desperate BRVR is. Have the textbox dialogue say the author's name to freak them out. I mean, BEN drowned did something like that.
I agree with some of my friends in the discord servers that this would show that BRVR has snapped and is so desperate to not have their friend leaving again that it's acting as if there were pokemon as normal even though no one is there, slowly showing how broke in their mind it is now. You could easily make this a psychological pasta instead of a gory one.
One person added onto my version of the pasta and to relate to the text saying "I want to die" and "why can't I die?" at the end of the pasta, the last text dialogue should say "BRVR thinks if you can't stay, then he wants you to end it all" and the delete save file menu pop-ups and the author has to make a choose whether to delete the save file or not, metaphorically, end BRVR's life or not. That's more sad than scary to be honest, but okay. Also a person suggested to fix the dumb ending with the plush toy at the end... Instead of it immediately being right behind them, have it be a couple days later after the author turned off the console and stopped playing, they receive a package without a return address. inside the package, is a note saying "BRVR wants to be with you forever" and there is a normal pikachu plush toy inside.
So, that's the end of my review.
Next Time: I'm going to review a pokepasta that's told in lyrics. And then I'll review a pokepasta that has another sinister-smiling pikachu in it. Don't worry it's better than what we just went over in my opinion. xD
