WELCOME BACK TO SAUCEZ REVIEWZ: POKEPASTAS SERIES!!!

Pasta Name: Prevention of Evolution

Publish Date: 2011

Description: The protagonist was attempting to evolve their last Eevee named EEeEE into a Flareon to complete their shiny Eevee evolution collection until they had a conflict with EEeEE being rebellious towards the trainer.

Fun Fact: EEeEE was named after a real-life AR code that somehow generated a shiny Eevee with this name, according to the original author.

Highlight: The creativity with the HG/SS buddy interaction mechanics.

Quote:
“You should have let me evolve.” -EEeEE

So let's start with the results because I think they're important for this version of the review.

Here's a link the debate for this pasta that isn't quite the best looking back at it.

Heads up that the rating names have been changed (to be more polite to the authors of these pastas):
good pasta = fresh pasta - the pasta still reminds fresh and good to this day
meh pasta = dried pasta - the pasta is a little stale but it's not too bad nor too good
crappypasta = spoiled pasta - the pasta aged poorly and anything spoiled is usually not too good

Fresh pasta (good) - 2
Dried pasta (meh) - 9
Spoiled pasta (crappy) -
10

(exclude one vote from each choice for the discord one since the bot has 1 vote for each choice to start with for the reactions to vote)

Are you guys shocked?

Honestly, I was at first, so I analyzed the pasta again and I can see why now. I feel like the debate was rushed looking back at it and I was thinking the pasta was a lot better than I remembered it being. why was I defending this pasta? I certainly rushed the debate because I was too excited about the whole fan vote thing. I think next time I do a fan vote thing, it will be in the ordinary review format.

But hey reviewers make mistakes sometimes and I experimented with a different format and it didn't work out too well.

I will admit I was really stretching to say good things about the pasta and someone pointed out that my defenses focused on the protagonist too and the action replay too much compared to EEeEE himself, so yeah

Looking back at this version of the pasta again (since there is a remake), EEeEE is a lot more basic than I thought with his motive and character when you really think about it

Now I think simple and basic stories can work if done right like hypno's lullaby (just a song about kidnapping children but it worked because the context was creepy) and la condena de milotic (just a story about a desperate feebas who makes a deal with darkrai that turns out to be a sacrifice of a loved one) and those two got the good ratings. but just think about EEeEE: a shiny eevee who abruptly gets mad and kills his trainer over not wanting to evolve them - a big emphasis on abruptly because it happens so fast.

I have to agree with sparklingdemon that EEeEE is pretty basic with his motive and it would be unfair to consider this pasta good when some of the pastas I've considered spoiled tried to have compelling stories

Abandon Lonliness (looking back at it again) I will give it credit for at least trying to tell a story and be mysterious with its atomsphere and it has a ROM hack too. the symbolism it had was good too. It was the repetition that killed it for me, but I am thinking about bumping it up to the dried rating because of it at least tried to tell a compelling story with its symbolism.

And for Pokemon Dead Channel, I'd argue that BRVR has a better developed motive and character because the pasta (as cliched and poorly aged as it is) I will give it credit for trying to build up to something even though the pay off wasn't the best. the dead corpses and blood at least show how insane and desperate BRVR has become while feeling abandoned by his owner.

And the one thing many people agreed with was the conflict could've easily been avoided because the protagonist of this story had options to use because of their action replay.

So, let's talk about the story now.

The story and summary:

"I'll never look at a shiny Eevee in the same way again. EVER."

I agree with my astarte persona in the debate that that is a big cliche to start with for gaming pastas I can't recall any on the top of my head, but I've read pastas that have started with this type of prompt.

So, they talk about having their action replay and they found a shiny eevee code on the internet because they wanted a shiny eevee along with a shiny vulpix and the code would have them be found in box 5 of bill's pc and vaporeon was added for the shiny eeveelution collection because they had a water stone.

Several days passed and they have every shiny eeveelution except flareon (and sylveon, but this was before their debut)

Why didn't you come prepared with one fire stone or use a code for fire stones especially when you found that shiny eevee code on the internet? You would think that after several days, they would think to get a fire stone in preparation for flareon.

So they got a bad egg in box 5 instead of a shiny eevee, they just moved the egg aside to box 6, they tried again with the code and got another bad egg, but when they tried it a third time, EEeEE appeared in the box

EEeEE was moved to the party to be trained because the max exp code was on.

They went out of the Pokémon center and tried to avoid trainers until they were spotted by one. Av 10 diglett was sent out and player sent out their lv 100 typhlosion and obviously they beat the diglett with ease. EEeEE gained exp as the player held down the r button for max exp and they became lv 37. They switched to EEeEE for the zubat and EEeEE used swift and the textbox says "The opposing ZUBAT died!" The protag was confused at first but ignored it. They forgot to hold down the r button for max exp too.

The trainer had one more pokemon, another diglett only for it to die. EEeEE became lv 52 from the max exp and it was evolving into espeon until claus cancelled the evolution because he didn't want another shiny espeon for his collection, so that's why he stopped the process.

The confusing part about this is EEeEE was lv. 1 before this battle and eevees evolve into espeon from happiness not level ups. I did say in the debate as a defense that pokemon can gain happiness depending on how many times they've leveled up without fainting, but I can't confirm that though. I've also read happiness varies on how many battles you've won without having that particular pokemon faint. not to mention, happiness can be gain through walking but he didn't travel with him for long especially when he was using ho-oh to fly to the area to train

EEeEE was angry as shown by the angry icon above its head on the overworld sprite.

After 5 minutes, EEeEE was trying to evolve to espeon again, but again, claus cancelled it.

EEeEE was angrier this time with the angry icon above his head - the trainer looked at EEeEE this time and the textbox said "EEeEE wants to evolve into Espeon..." Yes | No options appeared afterwards. claus selected no for obvious reasons.

EEeEE was jumping up and down like if he was throwing a tantrum.

I think the usage of the buddy mechanics are kind of creative in this pasta and I still stand by that defense I made in the debate. the other defenses I made - not as much, but there are some defenses I made that they would've applied better in other pastas but not this one though.

The player realized that everyone in his party except EEeEE became bad eggs and EEeEE's sprite in the summary menu had an evil smirk on his face.

So claus tried to release EEeEE at the pokemon center but the textbox read "EEeEE won't leave without a fight." and a random encounter appeared as it was a battle and EEeEE was the opposer.

The player had typhlosion again out of nowhere and their sprite along with EEeEE's were bloody. Where did the blood come from?

I was thinking maybe he killed off the other pokemon in the party but that wouldn't make sense for typhlosion since it said earlier everyone except EEeEE became a bad egg.

Anyway, typhlosion was too scared to fight.

EEeEE used bite and then the move "Kill".

They could've used something more clever with one-hit ko moves like guillotine or something

"Claus is out of usable Pokémon. Claus fell victim to EEeEE."

They were transferred to Ilex forest instead of the pokemon center and it was dark red instead of the usual green

Here's a part I must've overlooked during my reads because wow this killed the pasta if it hasn't been killed already

There were bones and rotting flesh were strewn across the area. The pond was blood red too.

facepalm

At least when BRVR did it, there was a bit of a reason why to indicate how much he's gone insane and desperate with assuming abandonment by his owner. Plus BRVR was made before this pasta. I know that coming first doesn't always make things any better but still. You see with BRVR, at least we get to see some bonding with the owner and you could understand why the owner was important to BRVR. you could at least relate to BRVR in a situation of abandonment by loved ones. EEeEE literally feels like a murderous child who didn't get the toy they wanted.
EEeEE's conflict feels so abrupt too.
Like couldn't you have build up to having EEeEE feel sad or disappointed at first but slowly escalates to becoming impatient and frustrated the more times their evolution got cancelled?
I can't believe I'm defending pokemon dead channel over this pasta and that's saying something. Heck, this pasta might even be worse than Pokémon Dead Channel because Pokémon Dead Channel was at least trying to tell a compelling story even though the piling amount of cliches kind of ruin it. This pasta is definitely worse than Abandon Lonliness because it lacks the symbolism and compelling storytelling that Abandon Lonliness at least attempted to do and it didn't have gore for no reason. Thank you sparklingdemon and Liamvice420 for making me realize these things.

But we're not finished yet, wait until the end of the pasta to make a judgement.

EEeEE was in front of the trainer jumping up and down with the happy icon above their head. "EEeEE wants you to suffer!" tried to turn off the power as they reached their thumb towards the power button. a voice came from the speakers that said "Don't even try it! You're not getting away from me!"
The screen turned black and slashing noises could be heard and when it came back the trainer was laying on the ground in a pool of blood with an arm and leg missing and eyes pitch black. EEeEE was jumping in happiness with the happy icon over their head. the protag turned off the game and "it worked this time" Wait, this time? From what I've gathered, you had your thumb on the power button but didn't press it because you heard a voice from your speakers.

They turned it off because they just needed a breather, then they turned it back on. "Oh, I saw my trainer get slashed apart, but I just need a quick breather. Let's check to see if that breather made the slashes go away and everything may be back to normal."

They were sent into battle after the title screen and the textbox said "EEeEE attacked!" EEeEE was the opposing pokemon and his sprite had Espeon ears, tail, and the forehead jewel that were dripping in blood. I was wondering how the parts got there, but it turns out they got them from being caught in between the evolutions being cancelled so many times and they're bleeding to indicate all of the pain he's suffering through.

1- Why didn't EEeEE have the parts before when the evolutions were being cancelled for the final time before the attempt to being released?

2 - It doesn't directly say that about the parts in the story

A demonic espeon cry is heard.

The only option was to throw a pokeball at EEeEE.

So that debunks the run option that Astarte argued in the debate.

The pokeball failed to catch and EEeEE used kill as a crimson red flash is shown with the textbox saying "EEeEE has killed Claus." the trainer's sprite is no longer there and the voice says "you should have let me evolve."

So the player throws their dsi at the wall and threw their cartridge away in the trash can

Then, they turned on their tv and it was black screen. thinking that the tv didn't work, they were about to turn it off until they had a voice from the tv speakers say "you should have let me evolve."

The End.

I take back what I said in the debate, the voice from the speakers is just as unbelievable as a bloody plush being right behind you.

As you may have guess and even the votes say so, this is clearly a SPOILED PASTA!!!

Should I really give suggestions to this pasta if there's already a remake made for it? I guess so since the remake is on Pokémon Black instead of Soul Silver.

SUGGESTIONS:

But if I had to give suggestions on THIS version of the pasta, it would be make the protagonist actually shiny hunting without the action replay or heck, have the action replay break or no longer work or function after the protag gets their final shiny eevee so it would be understandable why they won't evolve them but there's a solution to their problem with the action replay with getting another shiny eevee.

Also like I said, the pasta should've had a build up with EEeEE being sad and disappointed at first with the prevention of evolutions but slowly escalate to becoming angry and frustrated at the trainer as time goes on.

The pasta could add a story element (since EEeEE seems more than just a CPU) with the player trying to get a fire stone from the pokeathlon games and EEeEE becomes envious because all of the NPCs having evolved pokemon and he isn't evolved yet. Have the buddy mechanic and have textbox say "EEeEE is jealous of the competitors' evolved Pokémon and wants to evolve into Espeon." or just "EEeEE is jealous." Something like that. It could say "EEeEE is GREEN with envy." as the green part is a metaphor for the GREEN, shiny Espeon that EEeEE tries to evolve into.

An everstone could be an element that could've added onto EEeEE's conflict with his trainer too.

My rankings for the reviewed PokéPastas so far (from best to worst, top to bottom):
1.  Easter Egg - Snow on Mt. Silver – Fresh
2.  La Condena de Milotic – Fresh
3.  Hypno's Lullaby – Fresh
4.  Strangled Red – Dried
5.  Lost Silver – Dried
6.  Creepy Black – Dried
7. Abandon Lonliness - Spoiled
8.  Pokémon Dead Channel – Spoiled
9. Prevention of Evolution (Original) - Spoiled
10.  Milotic's Revenge – Spoiled

3 Fresh Pastas | 3 Dried Pastas | 4 Spoiled Pastas

Yeah, I think it's slightly worse than Pokémon Dead Channel because there is no compelling motive or character for EEeEE other than they just wanted to evolve and it was so abrupt and the protagonist made poor decisions and could've avoided the conflict easily. Plus, it feels a bit of a rip-off of Pokémon Dead Channel too only instead of abandonment it's refusal.

Ugh, I hope I cleared up things a lot better in this version of the review. Speaking of versions, I can agree that the 2020 remake of Prevention of Evolution is superior compared to this version of the pasta. But, the question is how superior? I will plan on reviewing the 2020 remake someday to make it fair for the original authors and to show how much they've improved on their work, but I don't know when.

Up Next: We're going to dive into the zombie apocalypse trope now. xD
