Description Update:
I've finally finished the fancy photo instructions! Please take a look at them, they are much better and easier to follow: [link]

Full view for the instructions.

These are the instructions for how to make an origami Hydralisk, a creature from the computer game StarCraft. Out of all the origami Hydralisk models I've seen on the web, I think this is one of the best, in terms of accuracy and simplicity.

There are about 30 or 40 steps, depending on how you count them. Foil paper is recommended to make it easier to shape, but it's not necessary. And course you start with a square piece of thin paper, white side up.

I originally designed the model in 2003, and I finished drawing these instructions in the summer of 2006. They're kind of messy, but they work. I might make a vector version on the computer sometime if enough people want it though.

These were drawn in pencil and then scanned. I added color in Paint because the shading didn't carry over too well in the scanned version.

Feel free to print out and distribute these instructions. Just make sure I am credited as the author. Enjoy!

Couldn't you just make a Youtube video of yourself making it? I did.

axcho In reply to rfwu [2007-09-08 05:14:12 +0000 UTC]

I could (if I borrowed someone's video recorder), but it wouldn't be as good! Your video is nice though.

The instructions will be posted either in a few hours, if I'm still awake, or early tomorrow. Hang in there!

Good news everyone! I finally finished taking photos for the instructions! Now I just have to add symbols and compile them all into a nice package. I'll probably make it into an interactive Flash thing, since there are more than a hundred images!

Hope, my patient followers - the day of our victory is close at hand!

*sigh* i hate doing any origami for the first 3 times...so damned annoying. But I digress...

getting it from step 7 to step 8 is making me want to punch babies. I would appreciate being told how to do that step or being able to look at a better illustrated diagram

Sorry. I was getting ready to make the photo instructions at the beginning of the summer, but then things happened and I got busy. I'm not sure when I'll have the time to make the photo instructions, but I'll keep them in mind in case a good opportunity comes up. I know a lot of people are waiting for them.

lol... ok... difficult... i must have missed a fold...

does the paper matter?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to tarushiru [2007-06-05 06:50:16 +0000 UTC]

The paper doesn't matter too much, but it holds its shape better with foil paper.

Hey, you have some great directions here. But I too am hopelessly stuck at step 10. I just can't see what it is I'm supposed to be doing...

Hi, thanks. Have you seen my explanation above? [link] That might help. But it's hard to explain in words. If that doesn't help maybe I'll try some other explanation.

axcho In reply to tinselsnips [2007-04-26 05:36:21 +0000 UTC]

Urgh. Well, it sounds like I'll have to redraw that step sometime. Do you think it would take a full-blown animation of it, or photographs, or just a cleaner drawing?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

tinselsnips In reply to axcho [2007-04-26 15:14:47 +0000 UTC]

A cleaner drawing would probably do it, but your best bet would be an actual photograph- most of the difficulty seems to be lying in tying to understand what piece of paper you're supposed to be working with at each point.

axcho In reply to tinselsnips [2007-04-26 23:16:32 +0000 UTC]

All right, I'll try to make a photograph version of the instructions sometime. Thanks for the feedback.

Nyvhek [2007-02-11 00:42:46 +0000 UTC]

I think you saved the GIF with too few colors, so the dithering makes it kind of hard to see if some of the folds are mountain or valley folds. Maybe resave it with more colors or try a PNG.

Anyway, I managed to figure it out and it looks awesome! I'll have to get some origami paper and make a better one.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

axcho In reply to Nyvhek [2007-02-11 01:41:15 +0000 UTC]

Actually the scan itself is just low quality, and the original drawing wasn't too great either. Maybe I'll scan it again sometime.

But that's great that you were able to fold one! Let me know if you take a picture of it.
