There had been some speculation that the highly symmetrical spread of light from nebulae like the Red Rectangle Nebula, and the Red Square Nebula, are the result of advanced Kardashev level II/III alien civilizations engaging in stellar scale mega-engineering. Of course, unless evidence emerges to support such postulations, the most likely explanations remains that the Red Rectangle Nebula is just an unusually shaped natural proto-planetary nebula.

I have read that it's a pair of gas cones which, seen from our perspective, look like a flat square object. You know, a pair of "triangles" touching each other in their points...
It seems likely, I think.

But I would be way cooler if they were some kind of artifact.

Thanks! This is one of my favorite pieces. I'm not completely satisfied yet, so maybe someday I'll do a remake.

I like these more traditional space art pieces, they have a feel to them that 3D can't really match.

They can't mach it... at least for now. But the time surely will come during our lifetimes.

I don't know what is it that feel traditional art has. But it gaves me a warm feeling. Like something old which has been storaged for a long time, like illustrations from old and dusty books with yellowing pages. I can't describe it. They look like scenes from a places out of time and space, I don't know...

3D is a good guide if you can't fiddle around with physical models of something, but it's just a tool.

It's like pulling out old Popular Mechanics, Incredible Cross-Sections, or David Macaulay's books, there's a concrete feel to the images.
