Oh yeah, I might think about it at some point, that could be interesting. (I was thinking about eventually having some design art for this comic put up somewhere, just as something extra.) Though I’m pretty bad at diligently doing very much in the way of preparatory design stuff, lol, so the frame from the comic above is probably the most detailed version I have of the ship right now.
Here are the quick sketches I did beforehand in preparation for the redrawing, though:

And for comparison, here’s what the original version of the comic looked like, with the ship looking more Fire Nation:

The ship will also appear again in the seventh comic [from the chapter, ‘The Blind Bandit’] from a different angle. It’s sketched out, though not fully rendered yet. So here’s kind of a preview of that:

Thanks so much for reading so far! I’ll definitely keep the idea in mind, I was a lot happier with the more Water Tribe version of the ship than the old basically Fire Nation one, so I'd like to draw it some more.

I wonder......
Who would win in an all out war between Canon Fire Nation or DR Water Tribes?
Both are imperial powers with advanced technology roughly similar to one another........
Though I'd personally give victory to the DR Water Tribes.

That’s a good question. I admit, I’ve wondered about that too. Actually, in my mind I’ve always kind of imagined the Fire Nation as having the edge over the Water Tribes in terms of technology, or at least their experience using it. (Some of the history of how the Water Tribes gained the technology that they did I think hadn’t been explored at the point the fanfiction left off, but for some reason I kind of always imagined that the technology was less a natural part of the Water Tribe, and was mostly taken and adapted from technologies of the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom. Whereas with the Fire Nation, even if they were getting technologies from people like the Mechanist, they were more naturally industrial. While I imagine the Water Tribes’ adaptability made them take to new technologies fairly readily, in my way of thinking they wouldn’t have been making as heavy use of it for nearly as long.
On the other hand, the Water Tribes, being waterbenders, could take far more advantage of having control of the seas than the Fire Navy could, not to mention taking into account the power of bloodbending every full moon. (And I also see their collective will to conquer and do battle as being stronger than that of the average Fire Nation soldier, given that they have more of a culture of savagery.) So from that standpoint, I’d also have to lean toward the Water Tribes.
On that same note, a fight between canon Azula and distorted Katara could be pretty interesting. (Minus bloodbending of course, because then the fight would be over fairly quick.) I think how it would play out would depend on a few factors, different from the more general Water Tribes vs. Fire Nation.

Interesting......
I can imagine both North and South Poles have great industrial cities made from ice given how it is very plentiful around those parts of the world, along with any other areas of land with large rivers and long coastlines being of a similar case.
Perhaps not the Si Wong or any other part of the world where it is hot and arid. Not enough water for the average waterbender to take advantage of.

Oh yeah, I think the distorted South is definitely more like the canon North in terms of how impressive their cities are. (And yeah, I imagine them all made of ice too, lol.) And now that you mention it, I think it’s said or at least implied that the distorted South has also conquered a lot of the cities that lie on islands or along the coast that weren’t conquered yet in the canon world by the Fire Nation. (Kyoshi Island being probably the main one.)
Yeah, the Si Wong would be tough for waterbenders, though maybe even the Fire Nation might have trouble with how huge it is. But maybe Azula's drill could power across it without too much problem, I'm not sure. (Though strangely, one thing the story talks about is how many of the places the Waterbenders have conquered have been turned to desert, because they suck the water out of everything to use in battle. So there's more places that are desert in the distorted world.)

The ship is a bit too close to the Fire Nation style: I would expect something more strongly tied to ice/iceburgs/etc. But I can understand the desire to get that fire Nation Vibe....
It will be interesting to see the contrast between Evil Katara of this timeline and Evil Azula of the main timeline!

Hey!!
I went ahead and redesigned Katara’s ship to make it look more distinctly Water Tribe, and less just a recoloring of a Fire Nation ship. (Honestly, this was something that was really bothering me as well, and given that the ship will appear again in the seventh comic, I wanted get something I was more satisfied with before I started getting into real work on it.) I found a Water Tribe ship (a brief image from I think it was episode 1 of Book 2, maybe around the scene with Aang and Katara’s conversation about the Avatar State) that I thought could work as reference in terms of how to handle the sails, as well as spikes on the prow that could be made to look menacing, so that helped a lot.
I didn’t rework the decks, so they still have a kind of Fire-Nation-esque industrial look, but it was mainly the outside of the ship that was bothering me most. (And also it would’ve taken too much time to do, lol.)
I’m working on the next comic now, though there’s still quite a bit left to get done before it’s anywhere close to ready to put up.

Lol, for sure. When I was deciding what Katara's Water Tribe warship should look like, I did initially look up the ships the Water Tribes used in some of their battles in the show, but since the Water Tribe ships in the fanfiction are described as silver/steel, I didn't think they would look right, especially since I think they're pretty small. (At least from what I was able to find. I probably need to watch the show clear through again to be sure, though.) So I did end up kind of taking the easy way out, and using a Fire Nation ship for straight reference, because they just look so huge and intimidating in a way that matched the image in my mind. (I briefly considered putting a sail instead of the more industrial stuff, but since I don't really know that much about ships/boats, I didn't want to just arbitrarily stick something up there that wouldn't make logical sense to someone who knew boats. And it also would have probably turned into a problem not having a reference for it for backgrounds--without reference, the results are usually just sad, lol.) If I ever end up needing to design Sokka's boat, his might look a little more Water Tribe, since his is a lot smaller and described as being made of wood.
Thanks!! I'm looking forward to getting further in. :3
