Thanks a lot for taking the time write this!
I agree with you saying hat the head-on is the easy way to do stack shots, especially when dead bug are used. For this one I tried to pose the legs in a little better position to make it look like it wasn't quite as dead but it is really hard to make a bug look alive from the side... For live bug I try to get the shot form the front side so that I can get a little of their behinds too in the shot.
I guess the question of how I could take so many pics of this object now has answered it self; It's dead And for the camera I use a motorized rail mounted on a heavy wooden block to keep the vibrations low.
