In this scene, John Smith (as Chief Martin Brody) berates Mayor Charles Phlegmming (as Mayor Larry Vaughn) for allowing the 4th of July celebration to happen at the beaches due to what has happened to his son going into shock after witnessing the shark attack and eat Cody. Phlegmming out of shame for allowing the beach to remain open agrees to hire Amos Slade (as Quint) to find and kill the shark.
