Description First to pose a question: Why is it that all the pieces you have no intention of even remotely turning out..actually turn out? While the pieces you slave over for days and weeks and hold high hopes for seem to land belly up?!?!

Well this is just a random piece I doodled over the last few days...mostly to relieve boredom. Before anyone says anything, yes there are glaring mistakes and I am fully aware of it. I didnt really use the laws of perspective because again, I didnt think this picture would go anywhere. It started as a very rough pencil sketch and then I scanned it in and decided to clean it up, thinking maybe it could be used as a collab trade with hibbary. From there it kinda turned into an experiment and I decided though there were obvious flaws, I would see where it takes me and what I can learn from it.

I had fun with the shading and highlights and did learn quite a bit I would apply to another piece. Ive never really done buildings so that too was a learning experience and I actually had fun with it!

This may go into scrap and I may or may not redo the sketch and try coloring it as a challenge for myself.

Tools:

Original sketch: mechanical pencil and regular copy paper
Final sketch: photoshop
Layers: 5
Size: 8.43 mb
Time taken: 4-6 hours give or take an hour

Apparently you have a problem common to a small minority of people, ... 90% of which are artists.

Possibly the most common solutions are to lower you expectations, because at the moment you start thinking that something needs to be good you start thinking more with your rational brain and less with your artistic brain.

Which also means that unless you have slaved a lot in the past to get decent results even when under intense stress (that is you were actually able to come up with a 90+ work while at art school and doing stuff you did not care about at all) the work will not come out good or will have to be hung around to be completed when the stress has passed.

Common solutions for the "untrained" is that when you realize you have started slaving you pick your pencil or pen. put it down, get an hour or two of REAL stress relieving (sleep is good, books are good, taped funnies are good, videogames are usually bad, unless they are very calm videogames like civilization or stuff) and then get back to work.

If the stress relieving had something to do with what you are working with, they work much better:
Let's say you got an ispiration for a given work by reading a bok, re-reading the book as a stress relievement is a good way.

*laughs and hugs you*

I think for the most part things have been answered here, but I'll throw my two cents in anyway.

You ask why things you plan and slave over just don't turn out to be successes? I beg to differ... you need to think a little on your definition of success. All of your pieces are looked upon and admired by the community. I could only wish my works recieve this kind of attention. Yet for that, I know when a piece I've done is good. Yes it could be better, but if we didn't have that urge to improve we'd soon lose focus and stop practicing our craft. (That's why they call it "practice" in the first place.)

I should think the problem lies with the same thing I find when I try to doodle a picture. I get very frustrated because I'm really at the bottom of the artistic ladder. When I get a picture in my mind I know how it Should look, and I find it impossible to put down on paper, so that I simply don't generally try. The only time I sketch, is when I just get in the mood to copy someone's work for practice, or when I don't have a clear picture in mind of the thing I want to put down. And that's when I can "finish" a piece and feel okay with it. Does any of that sound familiar to you?

I think perhaps this piece is a prime example of this in motion.(and a most excellent example of hobbit architecture may I add)

I've nothing but praise for this. No critique but a positive way of thinking. Does the perspective look off to you? How so? Is it not plausible that this is a kind of "L shaped" building with a tree in the back corner grown to great size? Perhaps the picture comes from a "fish eye lens" type of view.

I know you've seen them, the seventies pictures that artists drew in liquid styles and outrageously out of any normal standard... drug art as it's commonly referenced... something to sit around and get high to? Well, I never got high to it, and still appreciate it for what it was. This follows something of that same standard... a whimsical exploration into the fantastic, following curves and making use of space available instead of bowing to stiff and straight lined reality.

In short, this is no scrap. Feel proud of your work on this piece, for you've really done a nice job. Sometimes, getting stray thoughts and building the piece that looks like you planned it, is as grand a work as the one you plotted through and through to a successful conclusion.

As tends to be the way with deviant, I wrote you an elaborate comment yesterday and it ate it up. I was peeved and decided not to try writing it agin until I was in a better mood

Now let me see if I can remember all that I said yesterday! Well to start the reason I seemed so critical of my own work is because well that is the way of artists, we judge our own work more harshly than anyt others. As for the self critque left in this piece, the explanation is simple. I did not feel like having a hundred belittling comments thrown at me. I knew what was wrong with the piece and I did not feel like dealing with a few nitwit remarks that would bring me down for the rest of the day. Of course there is a paradox in my logic, I want to improve and I want to know what is wrong with my art so I could know HOW to improve but at the same time I don't. I want helpful advice as opposed to the blatantly obvious with no insight as to how to remedy the problem. For example a person will say "this is all wrong" Well alright..point taken but how is it wrong and for that matter how do you think it can be fixed? Too often it seems fellow deviants are quick to judge others harder than must be done. As if we are not hard on ourselves enough!

As for the question posed at the beginning, I think I knew the answer to my own question before I even posed it. It is simply a matter of frsutration! When you plan and invest a great deal many hours on a piece and it doesnt work out..it is natural to feel as if you have failed. Then there are the pieces that seem to blurt out within a matter of minutes and those turn out better than the ones you wanted to turn out! Naturally the problem lies in holding high expectations for a piece and pushing yourself to succeed as opposed to simply enjoying the whim of creativity and allowing it to lead you where it pleases without fear of failure! Odd mental world we artists live in, no?

I am always humbled by your words. When so much negative seems to hover in this world it is a bright beacon of light to find someone that hunts for the positive and strives to make a person see their accomplishments as opposed to failures! I only hope that others will come to appreciate your art of words and give you well deserved words of encouragement as you have for me. It seems the art of writing doesn't always carry the weight of the visual art on deviant. However, it makes the craft no less daunting and difficult to master. I commend you always for the inspirational words you write, whether they come in a comment to a fellow deviant or in a poem you write.

With sincerity,
~Ana

Without the pretty picture, most browsers don't really want to take the time I think... we live in a world today where things have to come in "second sound bites" or we would never be able to take in all the info we seek and stay sane...

Ah well. But to be appreciated... it IS a good feeling. I do understand your feelings as to self critique... editing my own works does happen upon occassion, and I have yet to really see print because I do not feel anything of my own writing is yet worthy to send to everyone and sundry with a want to publish.

But I'll get there, one of these days.

But you have talent, a way with words most people do. I think that is because it comes from the heart, your writing reflects the beauty of the person behind it. I have said it before and I will say it again, you are an extroardinarily wonderful person and I am honored to have had someone like you visit my gallery and leave such awe inspiring words for me! I look forward to seeing your work published..I reserve the first copy .

So true, so true.... I tend to have the same problem. What really sucks is when you have a deadline for, oh let's say classes, and you CAN'T SEEM TO DRAW ANYTHING!!!!!! That's been my experience at least.

Anyways, this "doodle" totally rocks the house (sorry for the bad pun). I love the style. It's very quaint and cozy: a place that anyone would be glad to call home. Oh, don't worry about the perspective problems, I didn't notice anything. Every line looks intentional. It's design gives it character.

Haha! Ditto! Funny how that happens. At least I knew that my instructor had never seen anything remotely as good as my best work(and I had no intention whatsoever of showing him), so he had no clue what to judge my assignments against

ROFL the da vincy horse 'Morn Roch' thing I did, I had done that sketch ages before the project was due and we had to copy a style of a famous artist so I just took that sketch, made some faux old looking paper and turned it in. She actually asked me if I had taken it from one of Da vinci's books..on one hand I was offended, on the other flattered ....sometimes art teachers are nitwits(ehe lucky for us >})
