Description
Had this idea floating around in my head for a while now and it got to the point where I had to at least put something concrete down so that I could see for myself if it had any potential. None of the designs are final, just how I saw things at the time with a lot of things I saw around me providing the main inspiration. Also I wanted to create a montage/banner image that almost had a ‘cover’ look to it, or a selling point to it that gives viewers an idea of what to expect. This was done entirely from start to finish in Procreate, which has now become my art programme of choice. I’ve got a couple of commissions on that require colouring and my colouring technique is definitely in need of some practice, so this also served as refresher course in that area. I’m always looking to learn from my artwork. Some of things I’ve picked up from doing this piece are:
When you start colouring, lay colour in everywhere! Even if it’s a background layer that’s all one colour. You can always change it later. I left a lot of areas white because I decide in colour schemes and it has a negative effect on the mind.
Most importantly - know your Filters/Blend modes, I.e multiply, luminosity, colour burn etc. I’m still learning and testing how they all work but if you can save massive amounts of time by choosing a layer blend mode and then adjusting the opacity etc to get the desired effect, rather than manually lasso tooling everything and blending it individually - then do it! Also, by experimenting you also get some really cool and unexpected results. Where these cool things have happened I’ve then gone and tested them on something else to see how it changes using different colours and opacities etc. - mainly so I can commit the processes to memory ready for next time!
And another important one; make sure your lines are right! I got half way through colouring this when I realised that the abdominals on the alien babe were wrong and had to redrawn them. I was obviously so happy that I’d got this idea down on paper and excited to start colouring it that I jumped into the later stages way too soon.
All good practice and will stand me in good stead when I come to finish my current batch of commissions!
