Description i took this photo yesterday, backstage, at my university's fashion show which they do an amazing job at every year. it really blows my mind how far they take it from the production point of view.

i think this is a good representation of the mood backstage. lots of chaos, but also lots of waiting, disconnect and longing. i love the fact that photography allows us to put time at a standstill, forever. it's almost like magic. i would never remember moments like these after having shot for ten hours non-stop without the power of the photograph.

i really enjoy the body language of the girl on the right. i think what it implies is interesting and i love the notion of doing un-staged, candid photos in the context of fashion because what the majority of people see is the thirty seconds of walking on the runway from each model, where they are smiling, posing and "manufactured" in a way, but what they don't see is this... and this is what it's like for hours before that thirty seconds happens.

to me it's an interesting dialogue.

It's interesting that you pointed out the girl on the right. She was the first one I noticed too. One could almost say that you can find in her expression a perfectly expressed sample of everything that's going on underneath the surface in this scene. She's frustrated, forlorn, and impatient, with almost a feeling of "is it ever going to happen?"
Personal examination aside, like so many others who've already commented, this is indeed a side to fashion many never see, which in some ways is very sad. When all you see is the production, you forget the human side, which you've captured so perfectly here, and you grow a little jaded towards the people involved and think only of the fashions they display.
This is a shot in a million, thank you for posting it for us.

thanks so much for that comment. you really "got" what i meant and saw with this frame.

and you're right. the human element is so much more interesting i think than just the "fashion" - there's so much more to a fashion show than a human mannequin wearing clothes.

i'm glad you like it!

this is a side of the fashion show that most never get the chance to see first hand. so with this lovely image, we all get to feel what you or perhaps dozens of others, have felt backstage, just watching.

thank you for this. for giving us a peek inside.

it's my pleasure. thank you!

it's honestly so much more fun wandering backstage and looking for moments like this. they're there. but the problem is that most photographers either don't care about finding them or they're too busy shooting the "bread and butter" stuff that they don't look out for them. i feel bad for them because these are the photos i remember when it's all said and done. not the hundreds of full lengths from the front-centre of the runway.

thanks! i'm glad you noticed. it's a treat to make these types of photos in between the "staged" ones. these are really the only ones i care about at the end of the day.

her expresion couldn't show the boredom (and maybe excitement) before going on the stage!

Well caught!

i think it was boredom... and maybe longing to return home after a 7am call time and waiting for hours to do a twenty second walk. i thought it was interesting!

It is interesting to me, as well.

I LOVE shooting backstage at shows, it is real, the front is just a show..

I bet your Uni is better than VFW by far!
