Description
At the centre point of Proxima Centauri b's permanent night side, the topmost layers of the atmosphere get cold enough that any carbon dioxide in it freezes and falls towards the surface as dry ice. This transition creates periodic massive vortices as the dry ice pushes away air on its way down, while in the upper atmosphere air flows in to fill the void created there. From the ground this descending mass of solid carbon dioxide creates an ominous spectacle better watched from afar.Other images in this series:
