I'm really glad you didn't expect that!!! I really did it with the intention of making people think it's Merlin and Arthur... but like a little 'off" so that when you get to the end you could go back and think HUH

But you know whats funny, I was on the merlin wiki and it said Gaius was Merlins uncle merlin.wikia.com/wiki/Gaius so thats makes it even funnier.

Oh god, I clicked it thinking it was Arthur and Merlin, and then he said "come on GAIUS" and my reaction was just
I never thought about what Uther and Gaius must have been like before the Great Purge and now I just want to curl up in a ball and cry because now I'm imagining how the Purge must have put a strain on that relationship they had and how Gaius must feel disappointed and a little bit betrayed but still understanding and loyal and

And I KNOW. The thing that really gets me is that Uther must have been relatively comfortable with magic at one point - I mean, comfortable enough to entrust his WIFE and FUTURE SON to it? Like, clearly it was something commonly used and everything was fine. And yeah, there's obvious trust between Uther and Gaius that must have been built up over time... and then slowly eroded during the great purge.
And GAIUS. Gaius always stays loyal to Uther, almost despite himself! Like he never ONCE was like "Merlin maybe you should let him die" but instead was like "HEY Merlin maybe you should risk your life to save Uther with magic, good plan yeah?"
