Description
This drawing is a 9x12 inch Copic marker piece done on Bristol paper. The character is Danielle from the movie The Flight of Dragons. She was probably one of my earliest "strong female characters" that I experienced as a child. I love the movie and highly recommend it.You can watch a speedpaint of my coloring this video over on my YouTube channel. Here's a link directly to the video: youtu.be/HV3yZ-e6XfI
Obviously, the character does not belong to me. I believe Warner Brothers did the movie, and it was based off of a book by... Peter Dickinson, I believe was the name.

I love Flight of Dragons! I saw the movie on TV when I was young - I think it was recorded on VHS - and Danielle was a very early crush of mine, I think. I read the book of the same name - no story in there, per se, but it has always stuck with me (and I am on record as actually saying I *do* believe in dragons because of Dickinson's theory!)
I am not sure what reminded me of it recently - but I did a search for clips on YouTube and watched some (the animation is not as good as I remember it, but the movie holds up) and I saw your drawing of Danielle. Just wonderful stuff - you really capture her well, I think.

Thank you so very much! I definitely agree that it's underrated and it makes me sad that I have met so very few people who have even heard of it. ^__^ Glad you like the drawing!

I believe it was The Dragon and the George that it was based after if I remember properly. It's amusing to hear the actors in this movie. At least the mages with James Earl Jones and Harry Morgan. Then John Ritter (mostly known as Jack Tripper from Three's Company). You could hardly believe that Darth Vader's voice (without heavy breathing) would come out of the evil wizard's lips lol

I was pretty sure that it based on The Dragon and the George as well, but the back of the box actually states that it was based off of a book by the same name. Sooo.... I was confused. XD
But anyway, I never got around to reading it myself, but my brothers told me that they were very glad to have seen the movie first because they (as teenagers) would probably NEVER would have guessed how to pronounce "Sir Orrin Neville Smythe" on their own.
Also, total agreement on the casting. So amazing. Just all around a really good movie that far too few of my friends had heard of.
Thank you very much for the comment and the favorite! ^__^

Apparently it is both of them in which he took his ideas - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Flig… - Strange considering that I remember it saying Dragon and the George on my copy. I wonder if there are newer packagings for it. I'll have to check some time.
It's a good book. It isn't extraordinary or wonderful but Dragon and the George was fun and interesting enough to keep me stuck on it.
Sir Orrin Neville Smythe is a fun name to pronounce when you don't know how it is actually said.
I was surprised to see someone who knows about it. There are some but not a lot of people are big fans of the show or have no clue about it or the history. It wasn't long after Star Wars came out that James Earl Jones did the voice in Flight of Dragons so I was sure more people would be interested just because of his voice but nope.
Oh no problem. It's such a nice image. I love how striking the colours are. Your Danielle has a strong body which is just perfect for the character. And yes, she has been a strong female role model for me as well.

((Would have responded sooner, but I'm having some technical issues. My laptop is being a little persnickety these days...))
But yeah, I agree that it's strange how few people have heard of it. In particular, it frustrates me to no end that it came out the same year as The Last Unicorn and should attract more or less the same crowd... And yet no body has even heard of Flight of Dragons while everyone will go on about how classic and amazing The Last Unicorn is.
Don't get me wrong. The last Unicorn is great. It's beautiful and another favorite fantasy movie from my childhood. But for them to be contemporaries and both based on books and both great animated fantasy films, it is frustrating that there is such a difference in knowledge/acceptance of the films.

I have found that not many people know much, if anything, about the Last Unicorn but when they do they certainly don't know of Flight of Dragons. It is interesting how a lot of shows are dropped to the side; however, both movies came out in 1982 which was a difficult time for anything that had even small similarities to Dungeons and Dragons. That was when people were in an uproar about RPGs making people go overboard and kill themselves playing the game like a LARP (live action role play) or becoming so involved that they think they are the character. Many people accepted the news and stopped their youth from playing anything related to D&D or having anything to do with things which was related. It is strange that The Last Unicorn wasn't as strongly denied but it was another show under fire from those calling anything RPG related being that of the devil and causing youth to kill themselves.
It sounds really stupid and it was. I got to see it first hand. Even though my parents did not keep me from RPGs there were other parents who did with teens. My mother asked me about the games and listened to me when I said it was not like what the news was making it to be. She left it be after that allowing me to decide if or when the games became a negative factor. Others were not as lucky to have parent(s) who trusted them to be able to leave something if it became a negative factor in their lives.
What made unicorns more acceptable than dragons is beyond me though. Both are magical creatures but then again unicorns were considered a good magical creature whereas dragons were the "bad guys" of the games.
Sorry for the ramble. That was an interesting time when it came to RPGs, dragons and unicorns.

Admittedly, the early 80's is a bit before my time given that I was born in '86. Some of that distrust of RPGs continued on past that because even when I was in high school I had a couple of friends who were allowed to come over and watch anime with us, but had to leave as soon as the D&D books came out. Go figure. We just planned our gatherings around doing other stuff first and then when she'd leave in the early evening we would start our game.
The thing is, I've actually run into very few people who aren't at least passingly familiar with The Last Unicorn. Maybe it's a generational thing? But even all of my gaming friends from college tended to have never heard of Flight of Dragons. All the same, the moral of the story is simply that not enough people have experienced how awesome it is.
That said, the unicorns versus dragons thing is not a surprise to me. Dragons in any western culture basis are pretty much always portrayed as horrible beasts and are the personification of evil. Meanwhile, unicorns are pure white beings of goodness personified that are tended by virgins and have healing powers. It's just the way that the two creatures are personified by the majorities. But I've always been the weird kid who would pout over the injustice of how dragons are constantly portrayed. XD

That attitude towards D+D has continued on to today and it is quite frightening how people are so uneducated about a lot of things.
Now that's funny. They could watch anime but not play D+D. There were quite a few people in the 80s who wouldn't allow watching of anime thinking it was all porn or satanic or something.
I agree with you fully. Not enough people have seen the awesomeness that is Flight of Dragons!!
You too eh? I'm just as bad. I loved dragons and dinosaurs since I was very small and that did not go over well with a lot of people because I'm female. Yeh so? Boys are supposed to like lizards and dragons along with all that other slimy animal stuff. *rolls eyes* Tomboys were not revered as good kids when I was young. We were too different and too misunderstood. Then if you had the nads to say that you thought something was being abused that adults thought was evil like dragons: oh man did they have things to say ... which I always fought or walked away from XD
