Urban decay. Mental decay as well, I guess. I was thinking about all the small businesses that have been destroyed by the corporations, the little odd places I used to visit as a child. There was one five-and-dime that had a gypsy fortune teller machine, mannequins, and always smelled of fresh popcorn. Those damned things haunted my dreams for years...

I wouldn't want the world that existed then, but there are a few things that I do wish were the same.

It was an era of forcibly conformist groupthink, venomously opposed to the non-average.

I just re-introduced myself to the country music of that time. I always hated it, but I realize now it was that hawkish attitude, the ignorant obeying of authority, the slicked-back conformity that I hated. Some of the music has aged well.

Are we both talking about the late 40s and the 50s, or is that just me?

I was born in '57, so I'm mainly speaking of the sixties.

I thought so, because when I was a kid, country music was still invisible nationally, and was very much oldtime instead of bluegrass or semi-pop. And I detested it even though or because I lived not very far from its country heartland.

It was big in small town NC when I was growing up, along with hippie bashing and loving mom, apple pie and war.

Funny how wars involving Americans always get justified by apple pie and mom. Funny how mention of oil and money is studiously avoided by justifiers.

Yup. Some are born followers, some born leaders, but there are way to many leaders who were actually born to drive garbage trucks.

I can think of so many of them who are not competent enough to drive golf carts, a much less demanding a task than driving trash trucks.

Dude, this was my wall paper for like 8 MONTHS!
It was the most breath taking work I'd seen when I first joined dA.

In my head, this is my house. But I'm not the person in the chair (she is the one I pretend to be), I'm the one on the floor.
Such a well thought out composition and excellently executed. I hope you don't pull too far away from such images.

how terrible! i don't know what to say without seeming to pry. i do hope it's not as bad as the word itself sounds, and that you have friends and family for support.

It will be ok. Thanks.
I was pretty freaked out and just reacting. I have heard from so many people...people who have lived.

i miss them too.....the store i'm now in was build over the rollerrink i had one of my first dates in ...way back in , like 1980....i find myself thinking about the ghosts of the building...and the one i was in before was built over where i used to have my karate classes, and the 5+dime, and the old, old theater.....smells of popcorn, old linoleum, and memories of card packs with stale sticks of gum in them......it's ironic i now exist, and make a living over the very ground i hold dear in memories from childhood....
that wall scares me

life just gets stranger, the longer it goes on. i remember things from when i was four more than what happened four days ago.
yeah, that wall... chichi's graffitti looks like some alien race left it there years ago, before returning to the stars.

One of the great things about having a stock site and an art site is that you actually get to fave things twice. I really like this piece and so I'm doing what I've wanted to so many times before and faving it twice.

That machine on the left side reminds us of the one that appeared in that movie with Tom Hanks, "Big". but seriously, another great piece that makes one think about all that we wish we could change but we are powerless face the cruel corporations that delete all landmarks and signs of the past.
