Description A glacier between the Helbronner and the Aiguille Du Midi Peaks on the Monte Bianco, the highest mountain in Europe. This area, located at about 3500mt of altitude, was italian territory, but got assigned to France after the World War II. Some groups of alpinists are visible on the glacier slope on the left of the image.

Panorama pic, 4 images stitched. Original size is about 6590x1450px.

Full view recommended. Thanks for viewing.

I read your tutorial, but unfortunately I don't have the imaging software I need to make use of it. And Autostitch had a very hard time finding matches, even with tweaking the parameters for a couple of hours. The problem, of course, is that when I segmented it I didn't give much thought to reassembly and didn't make enough overlap. So I'll have to do it by hand whenever I get the software I need. Any recommendations?

i've heard that photoshop has stitching capabilities. as a free alternative, you can try the gimp from [link] . it does not automate the stitching process (but i know some plugin is available to support that) but it allows to stretch images (even on spherical surfaces) and to modify their proportions and perspective. it requires some patience, and some knowledge of the main tools of the program, but it can do the trick.

Thank you very much. The critical thing is blended overlap, which I don't mind trying to do by hand, since I'll have your tutorial to refer to. I doubt that anything completely automated will be able to handle it, considering the sources I have to work with. I'm on the verge of joining the digital photography age, and when I do, I'll get Photoshop or something similar if I can find something better for me. In the meantime, I'll try Gimp.

Thank you very much. My problem is that I haven't invested in any decent image editing software yet, or even started looking for some, and what I have now makes only butt joints. [link] But I'll try Autostitch as soon as I get a chance.

Looking at it just sends shivers down my spine. Those mountains are so majestic! I can't imagine what's it like to climb there. You must feel like an ant
The whole view demands respect, but somehow I don't find it unwelcoming. It's good to see some parts of Europe have some snow still, by the way. Thanks for sharing!

that's lovely... the clouds coming up along the horizon give a real sense of vertigo... almost putting me in anticipation of the approaching storm... great capture(s) well stitched and lovely "real" atmospheric eye-candy!
what was the camera/settings?

barninga In reply to Coquin [2006-09-05 13:54:40 +0000 UTC]

thanks for your kind comment... vertigo is just the feeling i had when looking at the glacier edge...

the camera is a canon eos 30d; settings are:

focal length: 300mm
iso speed: 100
shutter: 1/1000

the yellowish shade of the snow comes from the rock debris and dust the wind blows during summer...

well, stitching photos is not that difficult if you use some good software, and in addition they were just 4 pics, on only one line.
