M A I N

Sun is shinin’ in the sky, there ain’t a cloud in sight.

Name: Corin Sommerfeld
Age: 25
Birthday: June 30
Gender: male - he / him
Race: Human
Height: 6 ft. 1 in.

Class: Student
House: Bellatrix

Magic: solar concentration

  • Corin’s magic allows for him to draw energy from the sun and concentrate it, similar to using a magnifying glass (though Corin himself would be the magnifying glass to follow the analogy).
    • This energy is emitted from Corin’s body. He usually concentrates it to his hands to better direct it.
  • Corin is capable of controlling the overall intensity of his concentrated sunlight.
    • At its mildest, it emits a soft glow, feeling warm and pleasant to the touch. At its strongest, it can be painfully bright and burn whatever comes into contact with it.
  • Corin’s preferred usage of his magic is to shoot beams of sunlight from his finger.
    • Corin is currently exploring ways to better shape sunlight into objects of his choosing and manipulate them more freely. As of now, he can form rather small blades, and wishes to form larger weapons.
  • Corin’s magic applies specifically to solar energy and no other source.
    • His magic works best in broad daylight, in surroundings with little to no coverage.
    • It is essentially useless during cloudy weather, dark environments, and at night.
    • Corin carries solar energy chargers with him, but he often uses them up in single, spontaneous bursts (think one sunlight beam per charger). He is tinkering with pre-owned chargers to enhance their capacities for storing solar energy while trying to engineer his own custom “cartridges.”
  • Liberal usage of his magic causes Corin to literally overheat and require a cooldown period.
  • A side effect of Corin’s magic is that his body is always warm. He is described by close friends as a heater with legs.

P E R S O N A L I T Y

Open-minded | Loyal | Honest | Laid-back | Resourceful | Opportunistic | Unreadable | Self-preoccupied | Reckless

The personification of a lazy summer afternoon. In spite of his intimidating appearance, Corin exudes an aura of calm and quiet warmth that unwittingly draws in people from all walks of life. Due to this quality, Corin is rather open-minded when meeting new people, and not one to make solid judgements based on first-impressions. He often bears in mind that people have their own circumstances, and goes out of his way to respect that. Prickly individuals in particular may be surprised (or perhaps perturbed) to find that Corin is not easily ruffled by their mannerisms, and his responses to insults may be interpreted in a literal manner. Those who achieve “friend status” with Corin will find him to be a dedicated and loyal friend. In times of trouble, Corin will readily help a loved one in need to the best of his ability. He often draws inspiration from his own experiences while adjusting or adapting his recommendations to best resolve whatever issues those around him may face.

Whatever work that is required of him—academically or otherwise—is treated with utmost care and completed meticulously. This is mostly due to Corin’s preference of completing work to the fullest and accounting for all possible avenues for failure ahead of time so that no loose ends need to be addressed after the fact. When approaching problems, Corin is often resourceful and draws inspiration from even the unlikeliest sources. He often brainstorms out-of-the-box answers that, to exam proctors and those who prefer conventional methods, can be difficult to follow if not downright frustrating to decipher. Though Corin often likes to take the time to explain his methods and win people over with his proposals, it can reach a point where he doesn’t see any point in taking it further, and he’ll delegate to whatever alternative is most agreeable to the people around him. He still does this with great reluctance and sometimes will even test out his own solutions on his own time as a way to “prove himself right.”

Corin is also eager for new opportunities and ideas, often wanting to pursue those ideas in the hopes that it could lead him somewhere new. He greatly enjoys trying new activities simply to say that he has at least done so at one point in his life. In his free time, Corin likes to enjoy the day with simple activities that some might consider frivolous—lying in the grass watching clouds, or sitting on the roof to enjoy the evening sun. He likes when the world moves slowly enough for him to take it in. What most might consider inconsequential, Corin takes to heart.

Corin can be prone to losing himself in his own thoughts, chasing mental tangents or ideas that lead him down a rabbit hole inside his own head. He sometimes stares out into space for long periods of time, something that unnerves people and prompts poor opinions. Corin dons a rather neutral expression when he does so as well, which makes strangers wonder why his head is off in the clouds, and can be a source of irritation to close friends and family, as it’s not entirely obvious what’s on Corin’s mind. At worst, others can interpret it as Corin being self-centered or stuck-up. Whenever someone does interrupt his line of thought, Corin will get snappish, as he hates being taken out of these “thinking moments” suddenly and losing his train of thought as a result. Corin also has a history of recklessly pursuing random ideas, especially when experimenting with magic, and sometimes injuring himself in the result. In social settings, he can unintentionally drive people off or say the wrong thing at the wrong time, something that prompts immediate regret. Corin often seeks reconciliation when he recognizes these moments, but the damage may already be done.

H I S T O R Y

Born as the middle child of the Sommerfeld family, Corin enjoyed the company of an older sister and a younger sibling throughout his childhood. Both of his parents were witches who hailed from families that actively supported the war effort against the Umbra. Corin’s parents both gave their support as well, but eventually distanced themselves from it all for the sake of settling down and starting a family. Though shunned by some former friends who saw it as an act of cowardice, Corin’s mother and father remained resolved in their decision. Corin himself admired his parents, but there would occasionally be tension from his older sister, who seemed determined to contribute more hands-on to the war effort in spite of his parents’ warnings.

Corin’s magic manifested itself relatively early in his childhood, unwittingly glowing after tripping and scraping his knee out in the backyard. It faded once he was brought inside away from the sun’s light, and a few more experiments confirmed that he had the ability to concentrate solar energy. Corin’s parents warned him to keep his magic a secret from mundane friends. That was fine and dandy in theory, but undeniably isolating. While he was still learning to properly control his magic, Corin often wore long sleeves and even gloves in order to conceal his magic, as his skin would glow when it was active. He often came down with “fevers” while at school due to overheating in his clothes, and was bullied for his seemingly weak constitution. It came to a boiling point when he was cornered in a corner of the playground, and he formed his very first beam of sunlight, firing it off at one of the bully’s feet. He missed by several inches, but there was no mistaking the smoking hole in the ground.

A case worker came by to resolve the incident. Corin’s parents and sister all put aside time in their schedules in order to help him properly control his magic, but the damage had already been done. Rumors followed Corin out of elementary school and into middle school, where he resolved to have lonely school days until he could attend a magic college with people like himself.

Until he caught a certain cheat-sheet swiper who had an aptitude for magic as well.

Corin’s friendship with Simon Vilar was born from the mutual agreement of keeping each others’ magic a secret, but the solidarity that came with it was life-saving. Corin started opening up to more people, and eventually grew to have a widespread pool of friends. Simon remained his closest friend throughout high school, but a half-serious dare on Corin’s part resulted in the start of a romantic relationship. The two faced stress along the way, but reconciled and broke up amicably, coming out of it all with an even stronger friendship than before. They attended the same college and were roommates for almost the entire four years.

News of Simon’s father falling ill reached Corin, who was just as devastated as Simon himself. The Sommerfeld family, who had grown close to the Vilar’s, donated what they could and reached out to mutual friends for aid. It wasn’t enough, and Simon moved out of Corin’s apartment to better reach the numerous jobs that he took up to support his family. Corin worried for his friend, even more so when their correspondences dropped to an all-time low and Simon dodged questions about his work.

The fateful night came when he heard desperate knocking at his door and was met with a breathless Simon at his doorway. Simon pushed a wrapped object into his hands, pleading with him to deliver it to some shady detective whose workplace was an abandoned address. Corin obliged, confused, until the detective explained Simon’s story. Corin contacted the police, arriving at the same time as them at the abandoned warehouse.

Just in time to hear a gunshot go off.

Corin barged past police and came face to face with Simon’s body. Flying into a rage, he launched himself at the nearest gang member. During the tussle, he was nicked with a knife and thrown off before all the gang members were incapacitated. Amidst the chaos of sirens and shouts, Corin crawled to his friend, sobbing as he held Simon before being dragged away by police.

Corin was inconsolable for months following Simon’s death, wracked by grief and guilt. When he worked his way back to something of a routine and regular day-to-day life, he consistently visited the Vilar’s to offer his company. He was no replacement to Simon, and he didn’t expect to be, but he felt it was the least he could do. Corin graduated college and spent a year or so on short-term engineering projects before his sister reached out to him about finally attending Saint Spell. He had nearly forgotten that the school had been his dream in early childhood, and had put it off so that he could go to college together with Simon. With nothing to lose and the realm of magic still waiting for him, Corin set off for the school.

And unbeknownst to Corin, someone familiar would be there too.

  • Corin’s wand is a laser pointer that he had bought for himself with birthday money during middle school. At Simon’s request, he started carrying it with him everywhere and using it to play with stray cats and dogs.
  • Corin has heterochromia; his right eye is a hazel color that appears gold in the right lighting, or when he is using the full extent of his magic.
    • People often stared at him because of it, so he went into middle school wearing a colored contact so that both of his eyes appeared brown.
    • After some time, it got irritating, so he stopped. People then assumed that he was wearing a hazel colored-contact to look cool, and it took some time to convince everyone it was his real eye color.
  • Corin liked to dye his hair, and did it frequently during high school. He has since tempered that habit to only choose “more plain” colors. His original hair color is a dark brown.
  • Corin is on good terms with both of his siblings. He looks up to his older sister, Edith, as a role model and adores his younger sibling, Sascha.
  • Corin’s sister and parents are all Saint Spell alumni.
  • The scar on his cheek is from the same incident during which Simon lost his life.
  • Corin is highly interested in technology intersections within the magical world.
  • Corin was taught how to fight by family friends who mentored him.
  • Simon’s death deeply affected Corin, and it shows to this day.
    • Though it doesn’t go well with most of his usual outfits, Corin will wear plaid from time to time as a way to remember Simon.
    • Some of Simon’s possessions were gifted to Corin for safekeeping by Mr. and Mrs. Vilar.
