Description
The Ranger class scout, USS Strider has been reassigned from Defense Outpost 1121 in the Korial sector to Star Station India. After a highly controversial "incident" in the Stogar system, within Klingon space, she is undergoing major refit operations before she returns to patrol duty.Based on an original Star Trek: The Role Playing Game (FASA) design, re-imagined by Brian Gillies and partially modeled by Kevin Riley back in 2003. This is still a WIP and there is much left to do. Finally got some name and registry details. Update: Added some red stripes atop the saucer in line with the ship's registry, to help break up the monotony (the Miranda class does this too).

I can just imagine this as a 9 active crew ship, with 9 racked out, 9 off duty, and three reserve/rotational. total crew 30 persons.. generally, 120 ft diameter hull, three decks deep ought to be a nice sized patrol vessel...

Well, the original FASA design was 187 feet wide, but that was with a notably wide span between the nacelles. This version draws in the nacelles and widens the saucer, so her hull diameter is probably somewhere between 185 and 200 ft wide (I don't have the exact figures on me). There would probably never be anything less than 4-6 people on the bridge at any given time, so a mere 9 active duty personnel seems a little slim. the crew total is probably closer to 60 than 30, but that could fluctuate. This is also during a period when Starfleet ships simply needed larger crews than they would need in just a few mere decades, not to mention the TNG era, where crews were far more sparse for ships of similar size and volume.
3 full decks is about right though. However, this vessel is sort of the starship equivalent to a split level house, with certain interior spaces extending from and/or recessed into those 3 main levels. As an example, the bridge is offset slightly from the uppermost main deck ("raised above" or "recessed into" totally depends upon your glass half full/half empty attitude I suppose). Because of this offset, as well as its increased priority as an inhabited compartment, the bridge manages to be considered a separate level, assigned "Deck 1." So technically, the lowermost ventral level is labeled "Deck 4."
Still, it is a nice patrol vessel.

true, true. I suppose I envision starships as being risky endeavors and throwing 3,000 of your best and brightest away along with the resources to make such a vessel - is not wise.
Sometimes the answer isn't bigger, sometimes the answer is "more efficient". I would rather have 100 ships with 30 crew, than one with 3,000. space is big, really big. within the first 12 light years there are some 21 stars to explore, within the first 50 light years? some estimates say 5,000 stars. to keep the peace, maintain a regular delivery or goods/persons, etc. we would need to have as many vessels as possible.
while not every system can be inhabited by colonists - every system inside federation space should be explored and visited especially when scientific facilities are emplaced.

Oh, totally agreed. 1000 or more sounds way over the top to me.
I myself prefer the ships of the TMP era because they are all smaller than most of the ships of the TNG era. It's just my personal taste, but then someone might accuse me of being a "period enthusiast" (ironically for a time period that has yet to, and may never, exist outside the fictional reflections of our recent cultural past. ). I guess I too just prefer smaller close-knit communities of crew.
In my mind, the mission demands the ship, the ship's specs demand the minimal crew requirements, and all those factors can yank and tug on one another before reaching a reliable consensus. Ultimately, it depends on the urgency or priority level of the mission itself, as well as more practical matters, such as the ability to secure all available resources to complete it (i.e. actual ships at the ready, officers and crew with appropriate applicable experience, specialized equipment, etc...). Those are just my so-called "litmus test" requirements.

Beautiful ship, fell in love immediately, you nailed it. It has just the right ammount of weapons, a scout without bite is target practice.

Thanks! I was inspired of course.
I agree about the weapons.

Nice ride, I like how it looks familiar to the era, but also a different design, like a scaled down Miranda fulfilling a more Destroyer role than Cruiser.

Thanks. Technically, she's classified as a scout, but I'm not sure how much overlap there is between scouts and destroyers. I suspect there's more than a bit. She's also pretty well armed, so that could further blur her overall distinction and classification. I don't know what role her diminutive size plays in any of it either, other than predictably disqualifying her from those roles generally expected of noticeably larger ships.
I'll try and get some renders with other ships in the near future in order to give a sense of just how dinky this little bug is.

Thanks so much! I know how distinct it is from the original version (which I think you've done a fantastic job presenting ), but I just fell in love with Kevin Riley's revisionist version the first time I saw it, and I just had to make a go for it.
