Description UPDATE: I've realized that this'll help more people if I place it under Tutorials, so there. Thanks to all the deviants who suggested it ^___^ I also moved "WHA-PAK" and Sam: Threefolds to the tutorials section as well.
**********************************************

A lot of aspiring comic artists seem to focus only on style, and not much on storytelling and characterization. Being a comic book artist not only requires the ablilty to draw, but also, the ability to tell a story. And to be able to tell a story visually, you have to be able to give life to the characters- make them look more animated and energized on the page.

One way to do it is through exaggeration. You can give life and energy to the most simplest and boringest situations, and you can apply this to any style. See above and compare the actions on the left with those on the right. I think you'll agree that it's really not that difficult. And I'm not exaggerating!

This was actually part of my lecture during last week's seminar, but I don't think the audience was able to see these clearly so I'm posting it here for your convenience. ^__^ Hope this helps folks!

Thank you for the lesson! We'll definitely keep that in mind. Erm... ~MeGoSa does have a point you should try to place it in tutorials.

Erm, the two guys at the first example look smoking hot. Makes me recall something by shonen-ai of nature.

SanchezisFine In reply to ??? [2006-10-18 16:48:06 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I've always been quite conservative when it comes to telling a story by not making my characters overly exaggerated. Maybe doing the exact opposite sometimes works better?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

batangbatugan In reply to SanchezisFine [2006-10-18 18:46:26 +0000 UTC]

Well it's up to you, I don't think you'd want to exaggerate all the time, perhaps only when you find the scene lacks something, or when it's appropriate for the character.

The opposite works too, I'm sure you'd agree that there are a lot of ways to go about it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SanchezisFine In reply to batangbatugan [2006-10-18 19:58:30 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I'm sure there are a lot of different ways to do so. It's all about knowing when to do it. Like most things in life.
