Description
Let me just say this: Even to this day I would recommend this game to anyone who loves Real Time Strategy games. In the past week I decided to play some of my more obscure section of games in my library and I just had to sketch and reinvent some of my favorite units. From Left to Right:
"Snowball" An Orca/Snow Owl Hybrid that was not only a beast to take down, but made for excellent reconnaissance with both sonar and camouflage
"Hopper" A Spitting Cobra/Kangaroo that I honestly used because it was somewhat fast, ranged, and ... I just that it was freaking hysterical to watch it hop around
"Slip" My top scout, Chameleon/Cheetah that could turn invisible and could sprint very fast. He could attack both close and far away, but he was kinda fragile
"Puff" My first ever creation, the Skunk/Coyote hybrid I made as my first unit in story mode
"Berry" the Poison Dart Frog/Tortoise, a poisonous tank pretty much.
I dunno why but I always wanted to give them misleading, yet fitting names. As if the AI would see the name Snowball and think it was probably something cute when it was really a giant killer whale with talons and wings. Let's just say I have a very eccentric imagination u///_///u
About the Game
To this day I think this game holds up and I'd recommend it to anyone RTS lovers out there who are looking for something unique and interesting. The story is kinda meh, but the characters are likeable and while the graphics are very dated, its cartoonish style has a certain charm and it actually doesn't look half bad, especially compared to some indie games out there today. Where it really shines is in its unit creation as there is an impressive amount of customization (and thank GOODNESS that it was not made in modern day or else we'd be dealing with a crap ton of Money Grubbing DLC BS where they would be like '10 dollars for 5 freaking animals') as the base game has about 50 creatures in total you can combine with one another, even more if you can get your hands on the expansion packs, which at the time were pretty cheap. Of course you need to be careful, particularly in story mode. In story mode you gather DNA manually so you will have a limited pool to start, gaining more as your progress, and resources are sometimes quite scarce. Each unit takes a certain amount of coal power and electricity to generate (it's a very steampunk universe) and so while it would be very devastating to make units armed to the teeth no pun intended it might be better to spend the points on a less useful body part as it might be better to just generate a multitude of good units than expend the resources to generate a couple great ones. Of course if you use cheats, like I did as a kid, you can just go crazy.
I would say its one downfall is that there is definitely a learning curve and you will probably get a little frustrated here and there when you are first getting used to what sort of stuff is going to get thrown at you, but once you get into your groove and figure out the unit types that suit you best, it's a pretty easy going game with epic battles as you watch your creations dominate the battlefield. And, of course, it's very fun to come up with new creatures.

Really cute, I would have to say. Hybrid abominations can be adorable at times. Take my iconic monkey/penguin hybrid for example. However, my liking for Impossible Creatures doesn't stop with how much it relates to my monkey-penguin hybrids simply by being animal hybrids. It relates to whom I give credit to for the original inspiration thereof given the distributor and the release date.

lol I do love how this game really slams home memories for anyone who has played it. Kinda shows what an impact it had on the few people who played it growing up.
Oh yes I knew about it. I would spend hours in that creature creation screen XD Sometimes I wouldn't even play, I'd just make armies in the creator.
It's so sad they never carried through with their hopes for a sequel.

So very true. Not to mention buying a copy online is pretty pricy (35 for a used copy and over 300 for new on Amazon) . Though I think that comes from the simple fact it's such a unique game.
LOL Go for it! I think that's why I like doing the nostalgia sketches. Gets people remembering some of the old gems.
For me I was a sucker for the Snowy Owl for some reason. Besides Snowball up there I had another fave creature that was a mix between the cuttlefish and the snowy owl that could swoop down and grapple enemies. Thus I named him Cuddles XD
