When doing this kind of stuff, do you ever use the Pen and Direct Select tools? I highly recommend it for getting those curves. You can always look up tutorials on Google if you want to learn how to use them. You'd be surprised at how many other possibilities open up when you learn how to use them, too.

Nope. Usually they are just recolours of existing vectors (including this one), so the most I usually need is floodfill and the magic wand. The only vector I've made so far myself (mysterious mare do well) I made in Flash,(which is why the line widths are so awfully inconsistent) I have used them in a simple fashion occasionally for elements in my wallpapers (the Pinkie wallpaper's balloons & streamers, for example).
