now I can see why your books look magnificient. I do something slightly similar with leather strips. It is certainly time consuming but well worth the work. I'm very impressed with your techinques. Well done.

In the name of God... That look like it take forever to craft... I just did my first "stitched" block for a custom order, it was so time consuming, I'm not sure I'm gonna do another one soon! But the look is something else! Nothing beats it! Keep up the good work! You are a true master artisan! I'm gonna look around your pages!

I am totally new to this. Would this be considered the very first step? Or would that be the paper and making those small folders of them? I am looking for more tutorials, so sorry if this is a bother type question.

This is the hand sewn headband on the head and tail of the text block. I did not show the steps for this, because it will be something I will get into when I complete my Bookbinding Instructional Guide.

What type of paper do you use? Also, what kind of cord is that?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
BCcreativity In reply to AntiquesDoll [2013-02-16 17:07:23 +0000 UTC]
I use tag board for covering the spine and upholstery cord. it works great and is so tough.
For the text-block, I use whatever paper I can get my hands on, but I do prefer Natural Parchment.

Fascinating. I just love how tactile the making process is. It certainly looks very labor intensive.
Sorry, if you get this all the time, but how did you get into bookbinding? Did you train in it for a job, or just teach yourself because you were interested in it?

First off, thank you for he kind words.
I have always had a fascination with the construction of books particularly the older ones. I lived in Europe when I was a young boy and would go with my parents to cathedrals and castles. It was amazing and I always think of those times as adventurous and exciting.
I started bookbinding because in 2006 I published a fantasy novel. I wanted to create a copy of my book in a 16th century style period bind.
I started learning the same time I started writing the book, which was in 2003.
I do not feel I am at the skill level necessary to create the book I vision. That is the one thing about creating. There is always something new to learn.
Well to make a story short, I did create a small following of my story, but I have taken on bookbinding as a great fulfilling hobby and don't plan to ever stop. I am completely self taught and give my thanks out to others that took the time to put together tutorials and how to books on the craft.
One day I will have my own shop of BC Bookbinding leather books and marbled paper. It is nice to dream.

Greedy me wants "narratives" in here, even if most of this I can figure out by looking at the pictures. SO... want an apprentice? LOL

One day when I feel I am at more professional stage, I will reveal all.

This is the coolest thing ever.
My mom used to restore books when I was little, and I have memories of hanging out in the workshop, coming up with alchemical names for all of the leather dyes in their bottles glistening through the streams of light from the high windows... But I never got to see this part of it!
I have a question about this process - the cords that have the sections of paper bound to them - what happens to the edges of the cord? Do these normally get tucked in under the cover?
