doesn't look like a painting. It looks like a drawing with felt tip pen.
Nice Zombie. The picture is just a bit ... very bright.
The sky is so empty and the grass too.
For a horror pic it should be darker, I think.
Nice made.

Indeed it is a felt style pen.. Faber Castell Pitt Pens to be precise. I appreciate the advanced critque.. This is by far my brightest pic in my gallery.. You may have interest in some of the other drawings in my gallery which are of a much higher contrast.

I quite like this one of the three you had there (though I was drawn to the coloured one) I like the grittyness and i like dark but I also like his face, there is something that is not too scary about him.

I mean you know you should be scared but his face maybe expression gives off the illussion that he wouldnt quite hurt you, but then he might without realising he would. like one who doesn't know his strength or danger. kinda like he has realised he has seen something but his mind is still sluggishly trying to catch up to that fact.

sorry for all that talk but i thought i would say what i saw. Other than that prattle I think its really great work

interesting take.. in fact if you read the story that goes along with this you'd realize that you hit the nail right on the head.. Bravo and thank you for the advanced critique.

Looks very nice, great work on the anatomy of the body of the character, also the trees and the shading on the whole picture are very nicely done.
As far as some advanced critique I'd like to suggest the following things.

1. Add a moon and perhaps some stars.. The sky is now bright and white and you really have to see/study the picture to see that it's night.. and if it isn't.. well, that's just not fitting for a horror picture like this (the brim between see and study)

2. Add a bit more contrast between your leading character and it's surrounding (some parts of your character almost blend in with the scenery, hard to see details this way, the hand and shoulder are an example of this, but further things are also present in this image).

Well, 2 points of critic that are the most of use here, I hope they are useful .
Very nice work in all .

Thank you very much for the Advanced Critique. You are absoluetly right when talking about the backround. I have been told that the monument in the back looks like its coming out of his shoulder. So thank you very much.

Sorry it's taken me a while to comment, I've been swamped!

This is great! I love the loose, scribbly line work. The grey tones/shading is very nice as well. What did you use? An ink wash, charcoal, pencil, or did you go digital?

BTW, I hadn't noticed the teeth until I read other comments - nice touch! I have a book about vampires that tells of the revenant vamp, the kind that turns bloodsucker after death and when they're in the ground. They nearly starve to death while down there until they can finally claw their way out. They are described as being much more akin to zombies in their behavior and appearance than to classical vampires.

This also reminds me of the vampires in Richard Matheson's I Am Legend.

Good work, Jacob!

Thanks bud.. I used Pitt Pens from Faber Castell.. I really love how they feel and they work very much like a brush which allows me to get the more gesture like feel.. I always try to stay as traditional as possible but i must admit that I post process in photoshop.. A scanner can only do so well so I usually adjust the contrast and add my borders.

Well normally I try to achieve a grey scale effect by stippling. To be honest it's very timely and quite hard to do on smaller pieces. So I really needed to find a way to get around this and well here you have it..

Looks great! has a watercolor feel to it! The zombie is great also. My only issue is it seams to me the tombstone of the cross looks like its coming out of the shoulder instead of the background. Is their any way to make the zombie get darker line work or something to bring him forward and pull the tombstone back. if this is traditional work then you would have to lighten the tombstone I imagine. Still really like the work! You have exceptional skill!

Thank you very much for the advanced critique.. You know I didn't really see the tombstone as a problem till you just mentioned it. I might just go back and try to lighten that up. Thank you again.

I enjoy the new style very much. It seems to have a washout look, is that what you were going for? The contrast is less than your other work is known for but change is good as long as it leads to better things in the end.

BeardoMcWeirdo In reply to dragyourblood [2007-07-17 23:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Well thank you for that.. Yeah i wanted to give it more of an ink wash look. Trying to bring out a little more of a grey scale effect while still looking realistic and illustrative at the same time.. Have I succeeded?
