The humid air clung heavily to Jacquelyn's skin as she trotted around on Curse's back, rising and falling to the rhythm of his gait. The overcast skies above were lazily sending drops of rain every so often, keeping the air cooler than most of the summer days had been.
After several laps of trotting in both directions, Jacquelyn quietly asked for a lateral movement across the diagonal, aiming to get Curse supple and bending nicely before she schooled him over fences. Curse flicked his ears back and jigged his head, breaking the soft contact she'd established.
"Come on, now," she warned, asking more firmly. Curse begrudgingly obeyed, settling into a brisk trot as they reached the rail. Jacquelyn continued to warm him up thoroughly, working out the troubles whenever they reached one.
She pointed him at a welcoming 3' fence, ending up taking a bit of a longer distance. Curse tucked his knees nicely and landed, breaking into a mischievous bucking fit.
"Stop that," Jacquelyn growled softly. "You know better."
After settling back into a collected canter, she headed towards an oxer, set somewhere around 3'3". Curse gained a little speed towards it, but she kept him in a nice rhythm, preparing to take flight over the fence. Just as she rose out of the saddle an inch or so, Curse suddenly slid to a stop under her, raising his head above the bit and shying away from the jump as if it were alive.
"GITTTT!" Jacquelyn yelled in that low, guttural way that only equestrians can manage.
Curse certainly lived up to his name sometimes.

Finally I managed to finish something, I like how it turned out better now that it's done. (:

Oh I hate it when this happens! My horse loves to slam on the breaks at the last minute! He'll come in super fast then slam on the breaks!
Oh the up hand, this is an amazing piece! Both their facial expressions are as accurate as you can get and the shading is superb!

Thank you so much!
Dirty stoppers are the WORST, haha, I think I might take a horse that bucks over a horse that refuses constantly. Last winter I was riding this pony that tends to freak out over random things (but he's normally good), and we were heading towards a jump all good and fine and then at the very last second he SLAMMED on the brakes so fast that there was no possibly way I could stay on, I fell off so fast it didn't even hurt. xD I did a weird flip thing off his shoulder and ended up sitting on the jump like I meant to or something, haha. It was so fast I even managed to stay holding on to the reins, usually when I fall they're the first thing to go!

Whenever I ride a horse that looks at the jumps and tries to refuse, my trainer is like, "YELL AT THAT PONY, GROWL LIKE YOU'RE AN ANIMAL" and I feel so ridiculous doing that I can only manage a "please go pony D:".

Super well done with this one <3 Love how you even made sure the reins were nice and loose, and the horse is most certainly not wanting to do that jump rofl

I have looked at this picture for a while because the pose just dosnt seem right but what I think is wrong is thy horses don't stop with their heads up. Look at any photo and the horses head nearly always go down, usually resulting in the rider falling off xD.
Bit aside from that, I LOVE this! the shading is just beautiful as is the horse And rider anatomy I loved the story and I also loved the effort you put into the background, especially the gorgeous mountains
So great job! I can't believe I'm the only person to comment xD

Horses quite often stop with their heads in the air. It depends on the moment and the reason for the stop. For example, a horse spooking HARD at a fence will generally stop with their heads down, with their attention on the part of the fence that is "scaring" them. Likewise, they can also back off the leg and stop with their heads in the air.

If you look at the reference photo (linked in the description), you'll see the horse is stopping with his head up, with a very unhappy expression and, to me, looks like he is about to whirl around to the right.

Horses definitely don't only stop with their heads down!

1. I used a ref for it, so it's not like I just made the pose up 2. it says in the story he stops, and then puts his head up.

but thanks for the comment glad you like it!

Sorry to butt in XD I saw you mention that horses nearly always stop with their heads down, I'm thinking that maybe this could be the moment after, when after stopping suddenly they rise the head and snort in refusal or try and back up?
