Description I dont know if I should submit this in 2D or 3D - large part of it is 3d (3 different renderings in lightwave, composited), but after that I painted a lot over it in photoshop. Anyway, here it is..

I don't know the first thing about 3-D rendering, so I can't critique. But, as a viewer, I very much love the idea of this one. Very interesting.

I wish I could give an advanced critique, but, I can't. You blow me away in rendering AND technique. All I can say is that I look at this picture, and go "DANG!". It's just that darn nice!

Has a very cool sort of Metropolis kind of feel to it(except for all that color). Cool design that conveys a pretty strong sense of emotion even with the cold metallic elements. Nicely done!

That's absolutely stunning dude, I'm surprised there's no comments yet and only one other ... I'm in love with this piece... It's so much unlike the rest of your work but works so well.

I love with intricacies of the machinery and the background and the beckoning to the light The angular shapes of the body are really cool, and my only critique is that the proportions are off, but it doesn't really matter because of the subject matter Keep it up.

btw, I have to change rendering software... using volumetric lights with radiosity in lightwave means.. hm, several weeks of rendering time - so I had to render the volumetric effects separately and photoshop them in. The radiosity rendering was not even AAed because lw is so bloody slow.

I've never liked Lightwave.... It's been so long, though, I don't know the rendering speed comparisons to Maya or Studiomax anymore.. Any time you use volumetric lights and radiosity, though, it's gonna take a while, but for a single frame, it really shouldn't be weeks.... I understand you may have been exaggerating, but it's conceivable.

My best advice is to try out some other programs if you have the ability to, or if you have an extra computer or laptop, just devote it to rendering when you need to so you have one computer free. Rendering complex things or long animations sucks because it basically ties up your computer for long periods of time.

well, I was exagerating a bit
I assume the actual time would have been probably around 5-8 days - I stopped it after around 12hrs and it had rendered a ridiculously small portion of the image.

I'll probably try maya/mental ray in the future. It's just that I got used to lw, and habit is a strong force..

Damn dude, days? I rendered about 3 seconds of high-res video with radiosity of a glass city (essentially a ton of glass boxes, lots of crazy calculations for reflections and refraction) and it took 18 hours in studiomax, I couldn't imagine one frame taking 8 days. You need to switch renderers big time.

and that's on a dual core athlon 3800+.... seems like lw doesnt like radiosity+volumetrics.... (/me looking for maya tutorials)

To my knowledge, not many people use Lightwave anymore, it's all Maya and 3dsmax for the most part... It'd be smart to learn one of them. If you have decent 3D knowledge already, as I'm guessing you do by this piece, it shouldn't take long to get the hang of a new prog. 3dsmax is way more extensive than Maya and probably harder to learn, but it's a great program.

for some yet unidentified reason, I'm one of those people who dislike 3dsmax.. esp. for modelling - that's why I'm leaning more towards maya.. but, I'll do my research before choosing, I think you are right about the features in max.

for the time being, I have to do a completely different kind of research... for my phd, which sits in a corner and looks at me angrily 'cause I dont spend enough time with it... but spend hours doing 3d stuff instead

Rahll In reply to begemott [2007-02-18 23:23:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, 3dsmax is more difficult to model in sometimes... There's almost too many options. Maya is solid, it has most of what you'll need and is still an industry standard...

Phd? Crazy, in what exactly? 3D used to take up a lot of my time too

comp. science.. computer vision in particular, a very different beast - although I'm now trying to shift it a bit towards graphics, for obvious reasons

thanks a lot

I tried to have a slightly unnatural look and make her/it look very big, so I chose to use slightly strange proportions when I started it. However, now that you mentioned it, the proportions keep bothering me every time I look at the image :/

Sorry dude, I know what that's like to have somebody mention something small, but then it's like a earwig gnawing at your brain slowly for weeks. The image is still awesome, it gives it a more of an unnatural feel which is really cool.
