Story:
After a further two weeks of rest, Lola finally got the all clear from the vet to start work again. They were going to attempt tackless riding! The plan was about to be set in motion. Amy would be in the outdoor arena, already warming up Dreamer tackless and then Aoife would walk in with Lola. Georgia would come in with them and hold Lola while she got used to having Aoife ride her. Then Amy would quietly walk around the school and Aoife would get Lola to follow, hopefully without any stress. Now it was finally time to see if the plan would work!

Walking into the outdoor arena, Aoife could see Amy and Dreamer practicing their collected trot and leg yields. They looked amazing as per usual! Lola’s ears were pricked forward watching the pair and she seemed curious as to why Dreamer would allow someone on his back. Standing in the middle of the school, Aoife began to put her weight on Lola, all the while talking to her. She didn’t want to make the same mistake as before and let Lola think it was a stranger riding her. Georgia seemed happy with Lola’s reaction to the weight and signalled for her to lie across her back. Aoife did so and Lola shifted her weight, but nothing more. Praising the mare, Aoife lent forward and swung her right leg over the mare’s hindquarters so she was sitting astride her. She felt Lola tense up, but after a minute of patting her and talking to the mare, she was as relaxed as ever. Aoife lent forward and fed her mare a carrot, as a signal to Lola that it really was her up there. Satisfied, Georgia walked forward, holding onto Lola’s headcollar for the first few steps. Once the pair caught up with Amy and Dreamer, Georgia let them go and allowed Lola to follow the gelding.

The plan was working! Lola seemed as relaxed as she could be and was reacting to Aoife’s weight well, by stretching down her head and rounding her back. It was a far cry from the nightmare that was their first attempt at breaking her. After walking around for 10 minutes, Aoife dismounted and fussed over her mare for doing such a good job! It seemed that Lola preferred tackless riding just like Aoife did!
