story:

The few days that had passed since the mare’s coming had passed without consequence. She stayed at the back of her stall, eyeing any person who came in to change food or water. She didn’t seem aggressive, just beaten down. She was slowly gaining some much needed weight from the box rest and the constant supply of food and water. The way she ate suggested that she had gone without food more often than not. After 3 days of the same routine, the team at Riverwood Equestrian thought it best to give the mare some training. Slowly Aoife entered the stable, with a carrot in one outstretched hand and a halter hidden behind her back in the other. At the smell of the carrot the mare suddenly pricked her ears up, but almost as suddenly she dropped her head down and turned away, facing the same bleak wood wall that she had been kicking to dust since she came. Unperturbed, Aoife simply sat next to the door, neither facing the mare nor directly away, with the carrot placed in front of her crossed legs. She must have sat like this for nearly an hour, watching the mare deliberately eyeing her up and then glancing at the carrot, as if weighing her options of grabbing the carrot and Aoife leaving or whether she would be caught, before the mare finally shifted her weight and turned to face Aoife. Staying calm, Aoife simply rolled the carrot closer to the mare, urging her to grab the tasty treat. The trick worked because after another few minutes, the mare took a tentative few steps toward the door and gently secured the chunk of carrot between her teeth before retreating back to her corner. It was enough for Aoife. There would be no halter training today, but somehow the day felt like it hadn’t been wasted. She silently let herself out of the stable door, smiling at the mare’s shyness. It was almost like her own.
