Description A pair of itty bitty but powerful GP15s, probably power for the Global II switch crew, sitting on what i think is called just the Stub track. I'm pretty sure the leader is an ex-CNW unit (note the smaller blower & louvers in the middle of the top section of the hood) I wish it still had the nosebell though! It's been fitted with air conditioning too, but strangely neither are RCL equipped. The trailer is a pretty standard GP15, but the white number board on the conductor's side with it's crude "Y" is pretty cool. the first loco i ever rode was a GP15, when i first hired out. And on my first assignment with the Sterling job, we uses the UPY727, a '15 with air conditioning. So, despite how worn out and crappy they usually are i still have a soft spot for the old beaters. Along with the SD40's, these are my favourite units from a foamer perspective, and looking back with a bit of nostalgia i loved working off them. But in reality these little goats are cramped, and uncomfortable to work off of, especially for a big guy like me! There is very little room between the hood ends and the end rails... County Line, Proviso Yard, in Northlake/Berkely IL 1-8-12

*edit* My old age is catching up to me, think these units are actually on what's called the Wardex track. I have no idea what a wardex is, or why this little track is named after it, though

I've always liked those little switchers, makes me glad that UP is still using theirs while others (NS, mostly) have retired and sold theirs off.

It's surprising the UP is holding onto them so long. Nearly anything with only four axles is getting sold or scrapped, but these little guys just keep going

UP seems to be smarter about motive power than the rest of the Big 4. They'll keep something until they absolutely can no longer use it, or even have a use for it, while the rest just want something with higher horsepower and efficiency than what they have now.

Shit back in the good days in the early 2000s in Spring they'd stick three of these on a plastics sorting move out of Llyod Yard and have them at run eight with about 140 plastic pellet cars. If you've never seen what 140 cars does to a small engine built for locals..

Those little things can haul some serious tonnage, but that's a lotta rolling resistance! We need two 6-axle units plus usually a 6 axle DPU on the rear to move 120 cars of coal. And even then we have issues with the hills! Can't imagine trying to move 140 cars with only twelve axles and no dynamic braking...

What made it awesome was a lot of the cars didn't have air hooked on them. These units are mini steam engines Matt.

Great catch! I believe these are both old MP units right?

Thanks! The left unit is an ex-C&NW, minus the nose bell, and i believe the right unit is mopac. These things used to be everywhere, now GP15s are getting a bit rare!

Itty bitty? They look like monsters to me, Matt!

Those are babies, not even as big as the normal road switchers. I think they were designed for tighter curves and clearances. And i think they only pack about 1500HP, but with very steep gearing so they can pull a surprising amount of tonnage
