Quite interesting loco. It looks a bit similar to the British Class 20 locomotives!

funny, they have rails at the end, but nothing along the walkways.

It's hard to see, but right where the orange and black meet is a handrail, mounted on the car body. Not having the walkway-mounted railing would make things pretty dicey in winter....

The venerable H12-44. It featured an opposed piston engine. It was a good setup, but a little ahead of its time. F-M is still in the business of building engines of this configuration. They just don't build locomotives anymore.

I believe they mostly build for industrial and marine applications now. At least they lived on, more than can be said of a lot of old loco builders!

I believe the engine in these was originally designed for use in WW2 submarines. I think they are supposed to be gutsy little goats, and some lasted into the 80's. Not the most ergonomic units, and that high hood and tiny windows must make it hard as hell to see where you are going, but sure would beat an RCL jeep!

All I can tell you Matt from being in the cab of a switcher locomotive of that ers..

They really do ride smooth and I'll tell you.. Whoever designed them made one hell of a good unit they never should of retired.

Very nice! I am sure OSHA would have Sh@t about the lack of grab irons! The old FM's were really cool! I especially like the rear of the cab as a reminder to a steam engine!

They do have them but they are mounted on the hood rather than the outer edge of the walkway.

Yeah. I know. I am sure that OSHA would love 'em/. I really like them!

They are the norm here because of tight clearances. Only the DH class have outside mounted handrails.

He was an amazing guy! It's funny how much of our world he helped shape (literally), and yet how relatively obscure he is today. Even my sister, who has a degree in interior design and is a huge architecture nerd, hadn't really heard of him
