Description Went down to another waterfront setting today, and the weather was again perfect.

This is one of my faves from the shoot.

Models: Nicola and Max, my sister and nephew

technical:

I again challenged myself with just a tripod and my Olympus Camedia C-350 Zoom.

No filters, and the only post-processing was a little levels work, to make the silhouettes really black. Sky unaltered

A beautiful shot indeed. Even more impressive for the lack of extensive post-processing. I love the serene tones and the silhouette is perfect. Excellent placement of the sun too. I'd love to give some suggestions, but I dont know that this could be much better. As for the centredness of it, nothing wrong with that. As useful as things like the 'rule of thirds' is, its really just a guideline and its good to experiment. With the recent trend to absolutely avoid centered photographs, this one actually comes across as refreshing.

I really appreciate your extensive analysis of this, my second favourite piece. I think the rule of thirds is a brilliant rule, but is only applicable to 99% of situations. The idea behind it is to help you look around the scene before being drawn straight into the main focus. However, in this instance for example, it's pointless, because there is of course nothing else to look at, the the central position gives it more impact. That's how I see it anyway

Cheers Saq

Second favorite piece? Which is the first?

I honestly think that the rule of thirds is applicable to, or should be used in, at the most... say 33% of situations. Yes I just pulled that number out of no where.

Just because a scene can be composed with the rule of thirds does not make that the best composition. A lot depends upon what you are trying to convey with the image. For example....... this shot of yours..... You could have zoomed out and composed it with the silhouettes in the bottom right quadrant (dividing the image into a grid of 3x3). You would have much more sky and water, and the shot would fit the rule of thirds. However, the shot would have changed completely and the emphasis would have been on the water and sky... and not the silhouette as it is now. Since your intended key element was the silhouette, this composition works better than adhering to the rule of thirds.

Yes, sometimes the rule of thirds can help improve the composition, but its not always the case. Adhering to it often would result in a monotonous and boring style. Very very few, if any, of my photographs use the rule of thirds. Thats not by accident, its simply been the case that for my intended purpose, other styles of composition have worked better.

I know, I know. I talk too much sometimes.
Cheers, have a great weekend.

I am glad that you stopped by my gallery, i would not have had the chance to see this image otherwise! I am in awe of the clarity of the silhoutte, i can even determine that for sure is the mother or a female! To be able to capture any emotion in something as subjective as a silhoutte is just humbling! This image tells a very beautiful story! Congratulations!

That is absolutely gorgeous! I love how it's silhouetted. You definately chose teh perfect moment to press the shutter; I love the position of the woman and the child. My only critique would be that it seems really centered (rule of thirds). Other than that, it's absolutely perfect. Bravo!

Well I took about 50 photos and this one was the best....and it did come out just right. The ironic thing is they were initially on a third... to the right, but due to cropping for sizing they ended up in the centre Oh well, can't have everything

Thanks again

This is beautiful in a very simple and precious way. The sky just glows. I love how it is the source of color in the photo. I also really like how the light surrounds the silhouettes. It results in a very peaceful view. It seems like one of those special moments that occur all too infrequently in our lives.

This tells a story, and you have captured what I believe to be a moment in time that is truely memorable perhaps to you, but a memory that we all possess. Using sillouettes, makes it more personal to our memories as we could be imagining this as a moment in our own lives. I really enjoyed looking at this.
