Take all the back roads and shortcuts you know... or not.From today's V8 Supercar practice session at Queensland Raceway, James Courtney overcooks things a little in his Stone Brothers Falcon. I've used the most dramatic image as the main part and the 'anatomy' of the lose in the film strip below.

Hehe... thanks very much! Yes, it's all about timing in racing. I was just lucky to catch this series. The title I actually had lined up for another series of images but they're from the film days so I'd have to find them and drag them out first. That could take a while!

Yeah, I think the pace of the 'southern invasion' had the locals a little worried in practice, hence them trying rather harder than at a test session. It was great to see JC do well - until engine dramas cut short his weekend. Bathurst podium must go some way to making up for it though!

Thanks! I thought about doing it in a same-size series, but the main image here was so dramatic, I decided to go for that as the focal point, and add the others purely to tell the story...

Good idea! I think if they were all the same size it would have been almost too much information and it would have lost its effectiveness. You seem to always know what makes the best photographs!

Pretty neat series, but the transitions don't work from the 2nd to the 3rd... there's too much of a perspective change in my opinion; the 1st and 2nd good well though... The main picture is neat in composiion and perspective, blurry in some areas, but that's due to top speeds of the car itself, and nothing you can improve too much on- I really like the implied motion and how I want it to play out for me and you do through the pictures

Thanks very much for commenting. That *cowluva is too kind. I do know exactly what you mean with the perspective change between the bottom frame, but that's purely how it all happened. Checking the details on each, there are six shots in all (one I didn't use) and they're covered by two seconds (data doesn't show fractions of a second).

You may notice I never comment on your car pics. That's just cos I'm not into cars. HOWEVER, a few weeks ago I found myself at a model car racetrack and attempted to photograph the vehicles as they sped around the bends. All I can say is that I now have a whole new respect for what it must take to create racetrack pics as good as yours. I found it was very, very difficult to get the timing right, and I'm sure the big cars you photograph are travelling a helluva lot faster than mine!

Thanks - glad you like it! The sequence is the first three insets followed by the main image and then the final one in the strip. There were another couple but I decided against using them.

Great series mate! I should have been there this weekend but was not to be. 
What shutterspeed did you capture theses at? It seems to be spot on for freezing the car yet showing wheel motion. Good stuff.

Thanks very much! Shutter Speed of 1/100sec at f14.0 with ISO set at 400. Focal length of 140mm. I think that just about covers things.

I have some similar series of photo sequences during the A1 GP, but I never thought to do one main shot and a few smaller shots leading up to it surrounding the main photo. Hope you don't mind if I borrow that idea for the future.

Great series of images mate. Very clear and crisp. You should consider sending a copy to AA and see if they're interested in publishing it considering his performance during qualifying. His first Top 10 Shootout. Lets see how he performs during the races.
Im assuming your lens has arrived and that is what you've been using!?!? How are you finding it?? What factors were you using for these images??

That's a good point - I just might do that, considering I have Monday off. See what tomorrow's haul brings. As for the lens, that's from the 75-300mm kit. My new baby still hasn't arrived. Australia Post says I'll likely get it on Monday. Hoo-friggin'-ray...

Go for it. Anything to get those images of yours out there. Tomorrow will be an interesting day. Lots of great racing with the reverse grid. That lens of yours is quite nice. Can you give me the EXIF from the shots....im just interested. How far away was Courtney's car from ya??
Bad luch about the timing for the new lens. Will you be considering a 1.4 extender for extra reach considering the shorter focal length??

Okay, try it now. I've replaced the whole thing so the details are there for the main image. As for the newbie, I'll certainly look at the 1.4x extender down the track. That, and a shorter lens, would keep me happy for quite a while, I'd reckon...

Thanks mate! Can see it plain as day now. Just for future reference. I try to use around the 1/125 sec exposure to make sure you get the element of movement in the images.

I was doing all sorts on the weekend, from fully automatic through to fully manual. Shutter speeds of 1/250 right down to 1/60 were used. I like experimenting...

Its great fun playing around. I did a bit of the same at the 500 this year. Obviously different settings work in different situations.
