Description I've scored a number of new watchers in recent days (thanks guys and girls!) and the resounding reason? Cars...

I was mortified when I realised the motoring world had accounted for only four of my last 20 deviations. So I thought I'd best remedy that situation...

The hardest part of this? Coming up with a title. I needed something with flames, so naturally I turned to The Whitlams . How lazy could one be...?

Submitted to *Shutter-Vision on 15 February 2007.

Update 21 March 2008: Changed again! Reverted to slightly more natural colour tones and added slight vignette. Image also marginally taller with cars hugging the bottom and right side of the frame.

Man you gotta love those V8 Supercars. I wish those would come to Canada, or even just air on TV. I always have to search out torrents for the races

Excellent picture though, catching the flames must have been difficult!

Thanks for the compliments. It's all about the timing, and I got lucky!

I'm surprised that you don't get coverage; is there nothing on Speed Channel, or don't you get that there?

Animekiksazz In reply to bigshotdan [2006-12-10 07:20:06 +0000 UTC]

There may be we'll just have to see. SPEED is pretty much NASCAR TV. It's too bad, it used to have all kinds of great racing until FOX bought them.

Oh right. Obviously it has a bit of a halo around it from years gone by then. I remember seeing online that it covered Le Mans from go to whoa a few years back. If they still do that I'll cut them a bit of slack...

They covered 20 hours of the 24, they broke coverage for .... NASCAR. And I don't even think it was a race, it was like practice or something.

Thanks, bloke! I'm rather pleased with the timing of this above all else. Managing to get teammates in the one shot is hard enough, but when they're both spitting flames it's all the more impressive...

How brilliant is this shot?
That's some excellent timing there, Dan. I love the esses in the background, and like everyone else, the pair and the flames. Too awesome that is.

Cheers, mate.

bigshotdan In reply to takara13 [2006-12-07 01:36:41 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much! It's one of those moments that are just pure magic to be able to capture. I'm just pleased that I managed it...

As for the esses, they're actually part of one of the club layouts; V8s use the full circuit, which in my opinion is the single most boring track this side of an oval...

takara13 In reply to bigshotdan [2006-12-07 16:19:05 +0000 UTC]

Hmm....well, at the risk of sounding rude, I'm looking at the four different configurations on the track's website, and....well....they're all a tad boring.

TMS: [link] ....inside the green section is where all the good road racing is. Usually, they do part of the oval, and then the roadcourse. Makes for some awesome roaring down the front straight when the T1 and T2 classes are out there!

TWS: [link] ....this was THE super track of TX back in it's day. Several different configurations, my favorite being the one that includes the addition outside the oval.

MSR (Cresson, TX....one of my favorite places to go):
1.3 mile= [link]
1.7 mile= [link]
3.1 mile= [link]
I may be getting to drive a little Spec Miata at this track soon. Not much of a power car, I know, but I'll be on a racetrack, so who cares?

MSR (Sugarland, TX....one of our newest places to play): [link]

Hallett MRC: (Hallett, Oklahoma): [link] ...track maps, watch the counter clockwise video....that's our usual direction there. On OLD course, lots of patches....but, lots of great elevation changes and off camber turns, too. I wonder if you can figure out which one the driver's affectionately refer to as "The Bitch"?

And, until this last year, our end of year championship race has been at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in....well....Ohio.
[link] ....take the lap around that one, honey....it's gorgeous!! I'm gonna miss that place. Now, our new place is Heartland Park, in Topeka, Kansas. [link] ....I haven't been there yet, but I can't wait to.

Sorry for the massive comment. I get all excited about racing.

Rude?! No bloody way! I despise QR. It's a dustbowl at the best of times, and a shithole the rest. I desperately miss Lakeside , but rumour has it that it's making a comeback in the hands of new owners (ironically QR's owners) for driver training and club level racing. Can't wait, because Lakeside has some real history behind it, not to mention something sorely lacking from QR, character.

You certainly do have some pretty special circuits in North America; Road America, Mid Ohio, Montreal, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta...

What do we have? Bathurst and Phillip Island. And the former is a public road 360-odd days a year...

takara13 In reply to bigshotdan [2006-12-08 15:28:14 +0000 UTC]

Wes was telling me about Lakeside a while back. I hope they get it all fixed up nice for you guys....looks awesome. I really like the one b&w shot that shows one of the braking point signs. Not sure why....just do.

Oh yeah....I'd love to make it to all the super tracks eventually. Of course, I'd love to make it to AU someday, too! SOT would make me a happy girl, indeed. Goodwood, however....I think I'd just stroke out on the spot if I ever made it there.

Cars, cars are always a good reason.

Damn nice shot there. Guess there's not much team spirit happening there

They just look so similar, not just the cars but the attitude of them (flames, leaning on the outside wheel). Had to take a few seconds out to make it clear in my mind that you hadn't pulled something in photoshop.

Oh, no need to worry about me inserting special effects; I'm very much a basics-only editor. Colour edits are about the extent of what I can do at the moment! This was down to good timing. The General's cars usually spit out flames on the overrun, and they seem to hold it well into the corner, so you have probably as much as a second to take the shot. Getting the HSVDT cars in formation was a bonus...

wraith11 In reply to bigshotdan [2006-12-06 13:44:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, at least with digital you get as many attempts as you like at getting the shot
Ha, I envy these people who can edit a photo and make it look like it's been taken that way.

I'm lookin' forward to seeing how Holden go with the new C'dores next year. Wheel in each corner, should be good

bigshotdan In reply to wraith11 [2006-12-07 01:30:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah, I'm loving digital. Back in the film days I thought around 2,000 pics in 15 months in the UK (with most taken trackside!) was a lot; now I take around 300 every day I spend behind the fence. Wouldn't dare do that with film...
