I love producing these because, if nothing else, it gives you a sense of how a piece can progress. And how quickly too. I try to do WIP shots like this for every piece.

I stumbled on your work via another deviants favs, and I just have to say you are one of my new favorites for sure. I work in graphite and have been trying to get the hang of digital painting for awhile now, you just inspired me to keep going with it. Thanks for sharing!

Having the traditional background will be of great benefit when making the transition to digital work. I hope you have fun with it!

Ye might be wondering why I favourited this instead of the final. The final product was great, but the fact that it was done from scratch is something amazing to me.

I'm glad you like the steps rather than the finished piece! I've always had positive reactions to these step-by-step deviations, that's why I make them.

If you've never tried digital painting, there are loads of resources and stuff that you can use to get started. I knew nothing and just played with an old copy of Photoshop and... well, here I am!

Fantastic! I love your realism so much. It's such a pleasure to... inspect. >> I can't wait until you add the hair. I want to see how you'd do that. I'd be worried about a different texture than the face... Iunno, would you do the hair a certain way?

BikerScout In reply to Petsuchos-Isis [2008-08-26 16:36:44 +0000 UTC]
I'm probably going to approach the hair in this one the same way I did with the Samuel Beckett piece.
Fairly large brushes to do the intial tone and then gradually smaller brushes using Dodge & Burn with a fairly high opacity setting. You'll see the hair progressing in the next couple of progress shots.
