I decided I wanted to practice before moving to another finished image. I picked Rarity for this just because she's pretty much my favorite. Anyway, I did some random poses and expressions. The running pose was quite challenging.
I believe I'll be doing one with the other ponies, and with some interaction between them.

1st left side above: She's in a good mood.
2nd: She's joyful.
3rd: She's shocked.

1st right side below: She's happy.
2nd: She's disappointed.
3rd: She's raging and ready to do a takedown on someone!

Neat sketches. Outstanding...

Kamelot is a pretty cool band... I am listening to Angel of Afterlife the song.

Yep, that's pretty much it.
And thank you very much!

Oh, I see.
Well, I would really recommend these songs:
-When The Lights are Down
-Center of the Universe
-Forever
Those are kind of their "anthems".

these are amazing. I love these kinds of draw a character in multiple expressive ways. Any chance you'd do more of these? love the running blur effect you left in on the bottom right, and the hair uncurling in the wind showing just how fast she's galloping. She has such springy curls I love it but always seemed so oddly difficult for me to get right.

Just want to thank you for sharing your practice stuff, I normally am too shy to draw but your Rarity sketch has been fun to practice with trying to learn how to draw again. Leaving those lines in really helped me learn how to get better positioning for eyes and mouth so thanks. I think once I get good enough I'll try my hand at coloring. Know any good places to get show accurate color pallets? Or happen to know the color codes to input into Photoshop?

Yes, I do want to post more sketches, and I will. Actually, I wanna create so much stuff, but damn I'm so lazy.
Ehehe, that wasn't supposed to be a blur effect, it was just the position I was going to use but then I changed it on the layer above.
Her mane is so much fun to draw, tho I had to study it a bit to understand it.

I'm glad this could be useful somehow.

Yes, this guy made some . Choose one here , download the .pdf and, well, I took screenshots so I could use the color picker.

You have no idea how much I want to be able to draw ponies like this. I would ask for tips, but I probably already know everything I need to for this, I just need to push myself to actually learn the things I know I need to learn and practice even more.

N-not that I'd shrug off any good advice, though. The way you draw ponies is pretty much perfect.

BionicleGahlok In reply to hip-indeed [2012-01-23 06:02:12 +0000 UTC]

Well, thank you so much pal!
Yeah, I remember searching the web for tips, tutorials and similar things when I decided to try drawing a pony (FiM style, that is). Unfortunately, I couldn't find much, and some of the ones I found weren't really useful for me. But I kept everything in mind anyway. What I did (and still do) was watch and study the episodes themselves. Watching walking and running scenes frame by frame, observing how the legs moved so I could try to figure the logic behind it. Watching the different poses and expressions.
Of course, observing other artists is also great, to see how each of them approach the same subject.
I hope this is somewhat useful. I'm still learning too.
If you wanna ask something about something more specific, fell free to do so. I'll be happy to help.

Yeah, I've been using references from the show regularly since I started drawing so much pony for the Artist Training Grounds but it's still the best advice a lot of people give me. Instead of just drawing something based on a still I need to try harder to figure out how and why they look like that in that frame, etc. I just have a load of fundamentals to learn and practice like guidelines, skeletons, basic general anatomy and all that good stuff, but in the meantime I'm still drawing for the ATG weekly, the EqD side of it which is coming and going in little events now and is operating simultaneously to/separately from the dA ATG, and since Jan. 1st I've decided to do pointless doodles of varying quality separately from everything else as a sort of personal challenge. And I'm going through some old cartooning books and stuff I've had forever irl, bit by bit. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm spending too much time drawing stuff before learning these concepts that it's becoming difficult to find time to learn them in the first place, but keeping up with all this drawing has to be improving me in some way anyway, and if I discipline myself further I'm sure I can cut out more 'sitting on the computer doing nothing' and 'playing video games' time to spend on real "learning about art".
