Description
*See it in Fullview.I decided I wanted to practice before moving to another finished image. I picked Rarity for this just because she's pretty much my favorite. Anyway, I did some random poses and expressions. The running pose was quite challenging.
I believe I'll be doing one with the other ponies, and with some interaction between them.

Oh I know exactly what you mean by 'sitting on the computer doing nothing' and 'playing video games'! I actually use some of that time to look at video tutorials and speedpaints, but the real problem is to find enough motivation to start drawing, specially when playing counter-strike and battlefield seems much more entertaining. At least you seem to be drawing a lot more than I am, so it looks like you're on the right track.

How do you get the anatomy so perfect? your sketches look so tidy - mine are just a total mess!

I actually have quite a hard time trying to figure out how to do each pose. And I don't really know much about anatomy, just some vague memories from random "tutorials" I've seen throughout the years here on dA. I also usually "scan" the episodes trying to find a similar pose to the one I have in mind, so I can see how the show's artists approached it. The bottom right sketch was the most time consuming one, took me several tries to get the legs right.
I do a "messy" sketch first to get an overall idea, but after that I create another layer and draw a cleaner version of it. I just don't do this for the head. For that I already go for the details.
It's just a matter of patience actually, I know some artists can easily sketch something in a matter of minutes, and quickly jump to the lineart. But it doesn't work for me, I usually spend much more time on it. Some of those sketches took up to 3 hours to be completed.

Rarity is most certainly the most beautiful pony. Great drawings of her.
Some of the Rarity toys actually include a bracelet for her to wear.

Really? I just made that to give her expression a reason. At least that makes sense for Rarity.

well its during, i can still remember it fondly.
I never liked the 1st and 2nd episode , too girly for me but when i saw episode 3 i start to appreciate the show and then when twilight screamed she sounded like timmy turner and that blew my mind and like the show even more

BionicleGahlok In reply to boomstix [2011-11-28 18:35:19 +0000 UTC]
That's interesting, for me, the third episode dealt with more girly subjects that the first 2, but I think a lot of people could relate to Spike's reactions in that episode. I actually enjoyed the first episode, but nothing special, really. I thought the show would extend the whole "defeating nightmare moon" throughout the whole season or something like that. I'm glad it didn't turn out that way, I find the "normal problems" to be much more interesting to drive the story than the "good vs evil fight".

oh i can agree too well i think its because of ep 1 and and 2 not my fave, im not a full blown fan at that time but i started to appreciate the show but dont have a 'best pony' yet until i saw dog and pony show (gotta love rarity's acting~!!), I practically beg my director to us to work on it but canada gets that ep but at least we got winter wrap up ,I got the part where rarity teaches twi to make the nest where she said 'not, not not there!'

hehehe yeah by far i gotta say she's one of the most developed characters i ever seen though i have to admit the wet hair thing i didnt expected to be popular not the sister hoove episode i mean, the one with the straight hair on season one since im the one who animated her on the slumber party episode where she got soaked on a dare i felt sorry for her since she looks miserable ahhaha

Ehehe, it's one of those things that you really can't explain. In this episode I also felt sorry for her, but in the sisterhooves social episode I found it adorable. It's probably because of the context, but still, I don't know why it caught my attention this much.

The show has an animatic stage? That's interesting! I thought it went from storyboard straight to the final animation.

hahah we hacve to have an animatic or at least thats the advantage of the flash program.
I was told traditional animators has to time their drawings on just sounds they recorded on their MP3s but flash can export a piece of animatic so we can easily animate it since we use it as a guide both visual and audio

True, digital animation has it's advantages. I hate flash (the software) but, damn, the results are amazing.

oh ahha cant blame you at times it has its limitations you dunno how many animators here really hates using shape hints, no matter how good you are shape tween and shape hints are iffy at best of times are one of those reasons flash's limitations

BionicleGahlok In reply to boomstix [2012-01-08 16:01:56 +0000 UTC]
I'm not like a character animator, but I have to deal with keyframe animation when doing motion graphics and visual effects. When compared to After Effects (and other software's timelines too, but this is what I use the most), Flash's timeline and keyframe system are really confusing. I remember, during a course, being asked to create a driving car with a moving background in Flash (you know, like those Tom and Jerry chase scenes where the background keeps repeating) and man, I had a hard time trying to break it down in flash. I made it just fine, but all I could think was how much faster I could have done it inside of After Effects, for example.

ah I see, I think its because you got used to the system you're good at and find flash's system different.
Back when i was using flash for training i wasn't used to the anchor point manipulation since im used to adobe illustrator's system. though i cant judge after effects since i didnt get to use one

It's one of my favorite software, it's really fun to play with. The problem with Flash, for me, is that it feels unintuitive, but once you get the hang of it, you don't need to worry anymore.
You worked with Flash alone? Or you used other software too (like Photoshop, etc)?

hahah you can say that again even till now all of us are amazed how flash wasnt suppose to be an animation tool but by accident it can be worked as one.
BTW im working on a new cartoon the character design looks a biy lacking but after seeing all its animatics i can vouch for its story

It have a pretty stylized look and, well, who knows, right? When I first saw the ponies at knowyourmeme I was pretty indifferent about them, I only started to find them cute after seeing all the elements together (voice, personality, animation, etc). It's hard to have an opinion yet, but let's wait and see how it goes.
Hope you can get to work on season 3
