Description Hastily-crapped-out sketches of a couple YGO characters drawn my way. These are intended to be eventual references for cosplay hairstyles (the 2 on the left will be wigs). Feel free to download.

Normally when I draw fanart, I try to imitate the original artist's style as accurately as possible, so I wasn't even aware that I had a "style" until really recently. My preference is to make people's clothes and hair as lifelike and detailed as possible, yet keep cartoonish facial features. This helps in terms of figuring out what a character's hair might look like on a real person, especially if that character's hair is batshit fucking insane . So here you have my attempts to draw some anime hair in a realistic manner, so that a bunch of us may cosplay these characters. (I didn't include Ishizu, since her hair is already realistic. If you want a reference, Kat, feel free to ask!)

Here's a "brief" (HAHAHA) explanation of each pic. Left to right, top to bottom:

Ryuuji Otogi/Duke Devlin
(to be played by =Tepea )
Anime Shot: [link]
I drew the bangs as actual hair instead of triangular chunks, yet I still had them stick up, like he got a little too friendly with the pomade. With the zig-zag dangly bits, I figured he has curly hair, which creates the illusion of zig-zags. ^^ As for the headband that randomly disappears halfway around his head, suddenly it hit me in a flash of DUH -- the headband goes UNDER the upper half of his hair when he puts it on, and then he pulls the lower half of his hair up OVER TOP OF the headband into the ponytail. So it DOES go the whole way around his head; you just can't see it under his hair.
...and may I just say that "SexyBack" is leaking out of my friggin' ears?

Malik Ishtar
(to be played by ~bookworm147 )
Anime Shot: [link]
...yeah, I got carried away. So much for stopping at a bust shot. I LOVE HIS PANTS, I'M SORRY. Malik's hair is relatively realistic, except that the bangs region sticks up really high off his scalp for no apparent reason. Like Sephiroth. So I eliminated a lot of that random stick-up-ness and made his hair poofy. He now sorta looks like a cross between Xerxes Break and Jareth... but at least the whole choppy layered look can be achieved in real life. (He's supposed to be tilting his chin up, but that didn't turn out too well. Yeah, REALLY rough sketch here.) Siege is gonna cut and style her actual hair for this one, so this will be fun.
Binky boy.
Also: Yes, I'm calling him Malik now. You wanna know the specifics of why, ask me. Or just wait for the "Malik's back scars" deviation to come up (and it is coming), since I'll explain it in the artist's comments there.

Ryou Bakura
(to be played by =birdewilliams )
Anime Shot: [link]
You've already seen my interpretation of Ryou, but here he is again anyway. The basic idea was that I started at the cowlick on the crown of his head, and gave him 4 defined layers, while trying to keep the overall feel of the triangular chunks. Like Malik, Bakura's hair is poofy and sticks up off the scalp, but this one's gonna be a wig so the stick-up-ness will be easier to achieve: Hang the wig upside-down, boil some water, and pour the water on the wig. 1-2-3 magic. XD For the record, I don't know why I gave him such an unnerved face... perhaps he just realized he has no ears and he's wondering where they are? *shrug*

Seto Kaiba
(to be played by Sith William)
Anime Shot: [link]
Sort of unnecessary since Kaiba's hair is already realistic, but I had the extra space and felt like putting some definition and layers in his hair. I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be layers in the canon, cause it does give that impression, 'specially in the manga. So I didn't change the hairstyle, I just drew in the layers. William won't have trouble with this hairstyle, since it's pretty much how he wears his hair already, except longer. William hates having hair in his eyes, so we'll just have to bar him from our beautician for a few months. XD

Oh, here's some other shots of my Ryou interpretation, if you were curious: [link]

Thank you! ^^ Haha, well, probably not, but here's hoping. XD Hopefully it's of some use to you, with your Devlin costume... though it already looks great. You had the same idea I had, with the bangs! ^^

Sweetness! Must remember to go to that site...

I think for Ishizu, I'll just dye my hair with temporary black dye, pull it into pigtails with the gold clips/bands covering them, and then have the tent on my head. With that one, you can't really see the rest of her hair anyway.

I do need to find reference pics for her costume those...*sigh*

^^ Sounds like a plan! I should warn you though -- I've used temporary black dye, and it didn't have any effect on my hair. When I went to wash out the ammonia, all the dye came out with it. I think they have temporary spray dyes... but I'm not sure where to find those. Any idea how you're going to do the gold thingies in her hair?

Got one! [link] It's from the same site I used to find the shot of Malik's back. Here's the site's home page if you want to browse around for other shots: [link] I found a colored version too, though it's not very big: [link]

Yay! I hope it's of some help to you when it comes to making your costume ^^

At Otakon 2005, I went to a panel hosted by a wig expert named Katie Bair. You should check out her tutorials and see what you can learn about wig styling from her; she's a friggin' genius, seriously, I won't dare touch my wig without her site as my bible. There's so much I would've had no idea to not do, so many supplies I would've had no idea I needed.

You should definitely look into kanekalon wigs. Kanekalon is the only fiber you should use if you want a wig that's actually usable; if you want to save money and buy a cheap wig, you might as well just put the money in the trash instead, because that's all you're doing in going with a cheaper wig. A standard costume shop wig is simply not going to get styled the way you'll need it to for Devlin (not to mention they're damn near impossible to brush).

I got my wig from Hello Cosplay , but Amphigory is a good site too. Both of them use kanekalon. Hello Cosplay is less expensive ($30 as opposed to $51 for my wig), but they're located in Japan, so it would take longer to arrive; my wig got shipped almost 3 weeks ago and it still isn't here yet. Amphigory also has a wider selection.

Hmmm... OK, thanks^^ lets see if I can remember all that...

Oh hey, I wanted to tell ya, I took this quiz thingy to see if i'd sell my soul to the devil. The result, and I quote: 'You'd probably end up making an angel out of him.' lmao XD
