" Dogs vs Wolves" for Speedy du Jour at60 Minutes
Reference curtsey of [link] Under normal circumstances I don't paint canines, and so when I need to, I fall on the almighty backup plan, known as stock photos. Considering I need to get it right enough to differentiate between a wolf and a dog, it was even more essential. Because, left to my own devices, my dogs risk looking like cats. Or horses.
My first instinct would be to paint puppies. They are to art contests what biological warfare is to weaponry. In my meandering search for references though, I came across this rather miffed looking grey wolf, and fell for the idea of taking that and pushing it a bit further with a more appropriate pallet and some angryfying details. The rough painting effect my corel painter blender brush makes also seemed a nice fit for that scruffed and ruffed look. But I do believe I still don't have a proper fur brush...
With a bit more time I would have worked on making some finer hair details, but when the time runs out, it runs out

I love how honest this is. So many people when they draw dogs and wolves and really a lot of animals, the extenuate the beauty of the animal. Very rarely do you see a piece of art work showing the natural beauty that a wolf has.

Thank you, though since I had the benefit of reference and little experience in general with painting animals, so the look of it is a lot less intentional, and I probably couldn't pretty it up if I had wanted to

I'm actually glad you didn't get more detailed with this -- I really enjoy the looser rendering and I think it might have lost some impact if you had gone in and painted every single strand of hair. The colours in the fur are very pretty.
Those eyes say "scary" but the ears are so cute. XD

Well, I find that this painting looks great, despite not having a proper fur brush~
To me it looks like a watercolor painting, and it's really interesting how it turned out to be.
