Description

Lindorm Denamark is pretty cute when he's not lashing out of fear, pain and confusion. Even if he's around 20-30 ft long

Considering his history with the sea I decided to make him a "sand lindorm", with thick, flipper like vestigial wings, small spines (because of his spiky hair) and a rudder tail tip
Although his head is shaped like a viper's, he's not actually poisonous. Instead he kills by constriction

The reason why Yule Goat Finland is carrying him is because Tomte Sweden knocked him unconscious.
And while Sweden is actually strong enough to carry Denmark around, his now small size makes it too slow and awkward (not to mention he still can't control his grip). So instead he's sitting on Denmark's head to prevent him from attacking Finland again

And this is also turning out in a good mental exercise on what Sweden can or can't do at that size, despite his enormous strength XD

I think he can't lift everything because he is so light it would be a pain to balance it. Simple law of physics. But it may also a good gag if he could do it anyway.  XD  Cartoon physics.

It wouldn't just be the light weight but also his scale that would make balancing things difficult. It would be very easy for the larger objects to start tipping in any direction and dragging him behind (the one time his grip would actually turn against him)

Sorry, shallow first impression: flippin' adorable. Those eyes, holy cow! On a less superficial note, I love the concept and underlying story behind the group picture. Nice exploration of the different angles of limbs, head and tail, lovely visual texture and as always, excellent merging with human features.

To be honest I don't have the slightest idea yet. Except I want to avoid trolls as much as possible (it wouldn't be very creative)

Have any suggestions?

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-08 20:46:32 +0000 UTC]

hmm, Norway can be a lot of things related to our folklore. Huldrekarl/huldra is kinds overused as well. I always thought his chibi/child form looked like a light elf, but they don't look much different from humans to be perfectly honest.
If I would have to choose, I would say Nor would be a Nisse: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tomte
Or possibly even Nøkken: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neck_%28…

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-08 21:28:27 +0000 UTC]

Huldra sounds interesting, but I definitely don't want him to be a Nisse (too similar to Sweden)

I need to take a closer look at the myths and culture before picking

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-09 11:48:25 +0000 UTC]

hmm, I can see that^^ tömte and nisse are the same after all.
I would take a closer look at :
Nøkken
Huldra/huldrekarl
Fossegrimmen
Draug
Bytting (changeling)
Mara (personification of nightmare. it's female, but you can tweak if you want lol. usually a small person sitting on your chest and riding, hence why it's called "Mareritt" in Norwegian. literally means : "Mara ride")
Pesta (although I don't believe Nor would actually be the personification of the black death, it's interesting to look up)
Kraken (lol)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-09 15:54:57 +0000 UTC]

The Nøkken would be particularly interesting if Norway took the shape of a river horse, but then he would fall under the influence of Sweden...
The Draug sounds like an interesting antagonist, but for some reason I think it would fit Iceland more (though I'm not sure if it would be a good myth for him either)
Norway as a Mara would be funny to see him cause all kind of mischief, but I'm not sure if it would fit his personality well
A Kraken would be highly amusing, but because the Manor is nowhere near the sea he'd die from the lack of sea water (and Portugal would so call him a meal)

As for the others I read a bit more and don't think they're a good fit

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-09 18:21:40 +0000 UTC]

personality wise, he would most likely fit huldrekarl the most. Mostly because no one ever defies them, because they are dangerous beings.
However, he could also be any animal that can live in a nordic environment. In Norwegian folklore, there are always a talking animal, even the winds have personalities.
Fossegrimmen works too, but to be honest, there aren't many beings that match him. It depends on your headcanons for him, since he hasn't appeared much in the comics.
Still, I think Huldrekarl or a water spirit will match best with him, but it will be exciting to see what you can come up with for him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Birvan In reply to PuffinPixel [2014-09-09 18:46:43 +0000 UTC]

Personally I don't have many headcanons for him, since I don't trust Himaruya's view of the Nordics > >
Most of the opinion I have is the popularity Norway has in Portugal. We see the norwegians as (non mediterrean variety) friendly, hard working fishermen (we do get most of our cod from them after all) who pay no mind to the freezing cold
So a water spirit would be a really good fit, though I imagine a more fresh water type because of all the mountains and forests

The only reason I don't go for the huldrekarl as much is because they're too human looking (and because they're too much about seduction, from what I read). I want to provide a bit more variety (though the ones with hollow back seem interesting, but I'm not sure if those apply to Norway as well. I only saw references about the tail types)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PuffinPixel In reply to Birvan [2014-09-09 19:01:53 +0000 UTC]

in Norway, the huldra have hollow backs like a hollowed out tree and a cow's tail. In sweden, they may have a fox tail XD
They are very seductive, yes haha

Nøkken doesn't only turn into a horse. It may also turn into a handsome man who plays the fiddle to lure women into the water where it drowns them. which is basically what fossegrimmen is? XD It's strange. Most of these creatures all have different variations depending on where you hear the stories.

He may also be a svartalv, if you could norse creatures as well? www.mythicalcreatureslist.com/…

Then maybe I could try a plant/animal hybrid design...

From what I read the origin of the word is tied to horses, so it makes sense that's the first form he'd take. And since most can't use magic properly because of lack of training, I doubt he'd be able to change into something more adequate (but on hte other hand he is acquainted with magic before the event...)

I'm trying to stay away from elves as much from trolls, sorry

It seems I'll go with the water horse design instead
