After Shinsa's little sister was born, her mother died. Her father was sent away in the Aquadia Military, only to fall in battle with a sea creature. There are no orphanages in Aquadia so Shinsa, only age 5, charged herself with taking care of herself and her sister. Others of their town would help out when they could, but Shinsa was the only mother they could have. Her sister fell ill many times, and it was this that began Shinsa interest in alchemy. No matter how many sicknesses fell upon Shinsa's sister, Shinsa was always able to find a way to heal her. It was for this reason other people began to take notice. They found out that Shinsa was incredibly smart.
A common trait among the Fish culture, is that many of them valued wisdom, and their schools were some of the greatest in the world (although hard to access seeing as they are underwater...). They also had a natural psychic power, allowing them to communicate telepathically, and sometimes bend object to their whims. Shinsa was above average in this aspect, and once she found out that she had such powers, she became obsessed and studied them around the clock. She would get very little sleep, and although she was an excellent student, she didn't gain many friends. She was even beginning to become a freak among the fish community. Her sister tried to help her when she could, but once they both could take care of themselves, she saw less and less of Shinsa. Shinsa would hardly sleep and would completely ignore anyone who would try to talk to her.
The obsession would have to stop. Shinsa had created many potions, discovered many different abilities with her mind, and she rarely cared for any consequences her actions and research would cause on others. She was even considered a "Sea Witch" and constantly taunted. She would make these people suffer her "wrath" and would sometimes cause serious injuries to people, making even more people unhappy.
There are sometimes very RARE underwater lightning storms, which can cause death and devastation on a large scale. Over the years, the fish people knew how to avoid such places, but when one was reported, Shinsa, instead of following normal safety protocols, found her first storm to be an interesting experiment. She used her powers to protect herself while in the storm, and even learned to channel it's energies. She became insane with her experiment that she even tried to enlarge the storm. But as the storm grew out of control, Shinsa ignored it and kept playing with it. It was then, her sister came from nowhere, barely able to protect herself from the storm. Shinsa was surprised, as she never realized her sister had the same powers as her, although still obviously weaker. Shinsa told her sister to go away, ignoring her pleas for Shinsa to leave the Storm alone. Shinsa didn't care and in a heated argument, lashed a bolt of energy at her sister, causing an immense wound. After seeing this, she panicked and lost all control of the storm and it began to cause massive devastation to the city, killing dozens of people. Shinsa went into a greater panic and simply cried. Her sister, gravely wounded, grabbed Shinsa’s arm, smiled, and used her own powers to channel Shinsa's own energy to completely eliminate the storm. But as the storm disappeared, so did Shinsa’s sister, as she used all of her body’s energies to save Shinsa and the city.

Shinsa, now grieved by her sister's sacrifice, wanted to kill herself. But she was surrounded by townspeople, all claiming Shinsa had stopped the storm, praising her for her abilities and calling her a savior. None them must have seen what had happened passed all the lightning. Shinsa wanted to tell them, but could not. They all mourned for Shinsa's sister, calling her death a horrible shame and accident.

A few days passed and Shinsa finally got out of her room. She packed a few things, and left Aquadia, hoping to never return. She set herself up in a cave on a shoreline and studied her alchemy, but didn’t study her own powers again for some time. Eventually she knew she needed to keep her powers under control, using them to keep practice but didn’t use them unless needed. It was during a visit to Felicia that she met up with Nyu, and the pair of them went on to visit other places and make new friends. But during a time of peril, Nyu was in danger and the only way to save her was to get something that could only be found in Aquadia. Extremely reluctant, Shinsa and company went back to her home town, where once again, she was treated like a hero. But after so much stupid celebrations, she cracked and yelled to the town that they were idiots and then told them the truth of what happened years back. When Shinsa and company thought their mission was now failed, the towns people gave Shinsa what they needed, but told Shinsa she was banished from Aquadia. She agreed and they all left, hoping to once again, never return.
Fun Fact: Shinsa is responsible for the potion that keeps the girls from being killed. If their bodies are destroyed, they will reform. Originally I had it that they only needed to take the potion once, but that added less suspense, so I changed it so they had to take it once a week. It does not protect against aging though so they can still die from old age.
