Description The Basics to Drawing Hands

INTRO:

I often get asked about how I draw hands, or get comments on the way I drew them. It still amazes me, because I use the some of the same old cheats over and over again, just sometimes with variations.

I had a teacher in my art school, whom was a Don Bluth Animator and he also complained about drawing hands.

I even recall friends of mine whom were well known artists, whom were phenomenal! Yet, they would get so frustrated and rant on there journals about how much they hated to draw hands because it was so hard. The 1 that sticks out in my mind the most was good ol' . She made this really funny rant, about it even tho' she was very sincere about her frustration about it. I was so surprised because she is a really good artist.

So, I'm making some easy Tutorials to show everyone the easiest Cheats there are to draw hands & fingers!

****************************

The Hand Drawing Cheaters

Now think of your favorite artists.... I'll bet that after you're done reading through my materials, you'll go back to see all of those favorite artists that you just adore, and look at their work and realize they are doing the exact same cheating I'm talking about!

Basically, what most pros have figured out is to memorize some poses that can be drawn really quickly with just a few lines. They use those same exact poses over & over- again & again!

Why?

Because it's easy, and it's fast, and most people would rather spend time doing more interesting things, or meeting their deadlines. And, it's also about the money. You finish it, and you get paid, or it's done and you can move on.

****************************

3 Fingers Hand Cheat

(See Preston Blare, Chuck Jones, Walt Disney, Tex Avery, etc....)

The easiest way to draw hands is to draw them with 3 fingers and a thumb. Most cartoons use this.

It almost always turns out when you attempt it, and it's fast to do.

Frustration solved.

But, if you want to understand the structure of a real hand, you'll need to be able to really visualize it better. If you understand the structure in your mind you will be able to better render it out.

Yet, you will also need to understand what that basic structure is.

Degas: Boxes, Sticks, Bubbles

There was a French Artist whom was so good, that he was greatness. I'm talking about Degas. The reason he was so good was because he drew all the time, every day. And, when you draw that much you just know how it should look, and how to translate it to paper. He would observe dancers and ballerinas as they were moving. He would draw them in motion. He was so good that he could sketch you in a few seconds, and he could even omit lines, and you could still see what it was he was conveying.

So, even if you don't have time to search for artistic treasures by Degas, you can look at this basic structure stuff I have here.

Basically it works like this:

You make a box, and add some lines.

You can also use bubbles with your stick figures.

When making any drawing, you should always make an "undersketch" which is also called "Construction Lines" or "Structure".

When your structure looks good, then everything else will fall into place.

LOL at the hand cheat.

Thing is, I've never been good at drawing three fingers. I can do four, but not three. I don't know why.
