Description Full view.

Old idea, new drawing. New meaning.

Been on the shelf for a while, but Illustration Friday 's theme for the week was "Sorry", conveniently providing me with a title and the incentive to finish this piece.

There are several things to be understood in here beyond the obvious depiction. See what you can dig out. I'd like to hear about it.
I've a really long interpretation for this, but I like to hear from you guys.

Did I mention full view?

See the details image for more.

Ooops! I missed one!

No seriously though it almost seems as this man has been stabbed in the back, possibly by a friend because why else would they say "sorry".

Yeah me too..
But after watching it again I got a second impression..
And that scene was so beautiful and a perfect way to die..
Think about it..
The last thing he thinks about is that he is happy.. and that he loves his family
He dies with a smile on his face..

On one hand I think that was one of the best things that could happen...

At first I found it comical, how can one shoot that many arrows in someone by mistake? Or perhaps the one arrow that missed was the mistake. Or maybe he's cupid and he shot one too many, thus the poor man is slumped on his desk. Perhaps it was planned, the man was looking at his lover's picture on the desk when cupid over did it. Interesting picture, for sure.

Probably due to my personal history (and probably because this is the most obvious interpretation) I can only think of a love story. The belt of the assassin makes me think of the cupid (duh!) while the letter, the portrait and the open door make me think of the existence of a third character. When I first fell in love, I felt like I was hit by a truck. Love can be a very violent and overwhelming feeling. The title (and the letter), on the other hand, makes me think that this is not an easy situation... I too lived a long distance relationship- frustration and sadness are all I can remember from it. This picture has a very melancholic aura.

First of all, love the chosen technique: it keeps only the necessary elements and nothing superfluous, yet it doesn't look poor by any account. The lines are clean but not clinical, the colours are subtle but warm... I really like it, visually.

Meaningwise, there is room for interpretation but here's what it looks like to me: the "dead" guy was reading a break-up letter and the archer is Cupid, but turned deadly and nasty by the turn of events. Suddenly the love the person feels is as painful as a knife in the heart... or an arrow in the back (betrayal).
This is where I hope it's what you had in mind, otherwise it would mean I'm projecting

Now is it me or is he wearing his shirt backwards? Is that a tag I see on his neck?

Unrelated, but I thought you'd be amused by it, is a true story the image reminded me of when I saw it as a thumbnail: some time ago in Japan (around WW2) a minister was assassinated in his home. Before escaping through the window, the assassin bowed to his widow and apologised for his rudeness...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

blackzer0 In reply to Majnouna [2006-06-17 08:26:26 +0000 UTC]

And the widow probably bowed back, because he is only doing his duty.

The tag thing, it's one of those shirts that have a stylish tag stitched on the back of the collar on the outside. Pointless detailing

Indeed there are a lot of details :) I love the textures in this, especially the white in the gap of the door.

It's a really interesting take on anti-Cupid-ism (yes, I've read the previous comments. I know it's totally unoriginal). I can't decipher the meaning behind this much more than my predecessing commentators (damn you people), but I can certainly say that I love the guy's hands. I love how his finger tips are resting on the desk and the letters. I love the creases in the joints of his fingers. I love the subtle knuckle. I love the nails. It's simplistic realism. Yes, I made that up.

I can see this as a hip book cover :) The style of the lines reminds me of the Bad Girl commodity.

I'll say this again: And you say you can't paint

Hands are always communicative. They make a character so much more dynamic.

Bad Girl Commodity - we have a lot of their stuff in hip bookstores. They mostly come in stationary and the like.

scrotumnose [2006-06-02 01:59:24 +0000 UTC]

first off, this is a really beautiful picture. i love everything about it.. how it was treated, the simplistic lineart, gyah. yknow, there are a lot of people that rave about the art giants on this site - like, say, artgerm or klar. and it's true.. they are heavy hitters, and thoroughly awesome. but you, my good man, have affected me in a way that kind of transcends their awesomeness.

best example of art i've seen for a long time. cuts straight to the heart, and all.

whoo! anyway! this is what i make of the piece.

at first, i thought that the person was writing a letter.. and then as i looked at the guy in the back and the arrows and the door, i realized he was reading a letter. now, given the circumstances i could think of a bunch of scenarios. the one that really grabs me is this one:

they are lovers. or at least, were. the guy in the back is playing the role of cupid (note: isn't cupid! just playing the role of), because it seems to me that he was the one that sparked the sparks, and the guy who is/was reading the letter fell prey to his charms. but now, guy-in-the-back doesn't love him anymore or doesn't want to love him anymore - for whatever reasons he may have. his inching towards the door is symbolic of him changing his mind, and the sneaky manner kind of nails in the fact that what they were doing was taboo? with yknow, homosexuality still not widely accepted, and all.

the arrows are symbolic. i don't think he literally shot them. the letter that the guy-in-the-foreground is reading is The Goodbye Letter. which pierces the heart.

the most important part of the piece for me is the arrow on the table. meaning that he missed... intentional, or no. either he couldn't deal with the guilt of stabbing his former-lover in the back, and sent out a warning shot in preparation, or he wasn't 100% sure of his decision, most probably because of societal pressure, and his wavering caused him to miss. the arrow on the table is this guy's saving grace. it shows that he's human. not an ass. not cold, and unfeeling... because he felt something, which made his first (i believe it was the first arrow) shot miss.

it seems like this isn't something that the guy in the back wanted to do, but felt he had to.

looking at the picture again, im beginning to think that it was because of pressure. it's the cigarette in his mouth.. and the whole joe-cool image that a lot of us try to constantly uphold.

for me, there's a powerfully tragic story in this picture, but undeniably human. and i think, that's why i love this pic so much. i can see myself falling into a situation like that. although i'm not gay.

cheers, man. this pic totally made my day.

Your comment is awesome! I really like your take on the piece. And... your words really mean a lot. Thanks man seriously. Huge grin here.

"It is painful for the selfish to fall in love, as it means they have to care about someone other then themself"

I think that quote fits this picture well, in my head.

I thought of cupid, and of an assasin, and of the two combined.

Cupid a hunter and destroyer of single status is "sorry" for piercing this mans thick skin and hitting his target, the mans' heart. As the man was once a selfish person with not much else in his life, keeping to himself and away from others (represented by the barren room, empty of all but him the desk the picture and the note (barring cupid as his is not real), It will be a painful transition to begin loving someone else. Perhaps it is not a lustful love, or a wmoen he's found, but his family, who he has hurt for many years.

His mother who so often was pushed to the wayside, or perhaps his father who was once in the same emotional state has come around and is beggin for his son's love. Perhaps it is a brother or sister who always felt inferior under the man's scornful stares and biting remarks.

Either way no matter how large the love is that is now growing in his heart, it will be a difficult and painful journey to being truly kind and loving as compared to the bitter selfish person he once was. And knowing this Cupid, the sender of love and assasin of arrogance and selfishness is sorry for beginning the man's journey to righteousness.
