Will probably get scrapped later, once more of my drawings start taking on an evolved style.After seeing the first 15 episodes of Gurren Lagann, I just wanted to draw something manly. And as long as I'm working on kicking my art up a notch on my own, I figured some practice like this, where I need to get back to the basics stronger, was in order.
References from Posemaniacs were used to try and get the angles right on the face and hand. (I'll get that hand better in my next practice. ) [link]

I like how this piece is presented!.... however it's scribbliness is rather unnerving....
dont take me wrong!... scribbly can work... just try to alternate darkness a bit more so that depth is more noticeable!
I'd advise a smaller nose!

I agree completely on the nose, actually. I figured the sketch would look better with that than a huge eraser smudge, seeing how hard I had to draw it in, though. I guess you could say it was a heavy-handed move on my part.

Why not? I got bored of my sketches always being posted with a gradient overlay for color. So I stuck it underneath, to make him stand out.

Ah, I like the anatomy! Everything seems in good proportion. The only things that bother me are the nose, the perspective of the left hand, and the sketchiness.
I'm assuming you want the hand looking straight on, pointing at the viewer?
Right now it looks like... it kind of looks like the finger is pointing down, but the other parts are pointing straight. You might be able to fix this by just drawing the finger as a large circle with a small part of the nail showing.
On to the nose! The nose is a bit too big for the face, but that might just be your style.
I also noticed the ear is... very high up. it should be just a bit lower so the jaw line is not so far away from it.
And the sketchiness is well, because it is a sketch! All in all, I REALLY like this picture. It is dynamic and powerful! :3 Plus blue is my favorite color, so that helps!

Thanks for the critique! I can definitely see what you mean on the hand and the nose. Technically, he should be pointing straight ahead, at eye level, but I wanted to try having him point downwards slightly, to work on a different angle.
As for the ear, excellent spot. I never even noticed that.

Oooh, that site looks interesting. And there's definitely something very manly about it, perhaps its the sketchy diagonal-line shading, which gives it that rugged look? All that dramatically flowing clothing certainly doesn't hurt, either.

A Capcom employee said on his blog that he's the son of Vergil. That would explain why he gets Yamato. Also, his Devil Trigger looks a lot like Vergil's.

Ah-ha, very nice! I definitely like the direction you're headed here... the new style obviously still needs a wee bit of refinement, but that's to be expected.
One of the first things I noticed here was that Ares' features seem more subtle, yet more pronounced. I can't help but see how much smaller his eyes are in comparison to previous versions... and I have to say, the change fits in very well. After all, the design as a whole seems so much more detailed than before. It's as though Ares has taken on a whole new level of depth. (Of course, I have no doubt in my mind that the heavier use of shading, especially contour shading, has a lot to do with this.
Oh, and am I noticing some segmentation on the hilt of Ares' blade? Or am I imagining things?
The only real critique I can give here that you haven't already likely discovered on your own is that Ares' nose looks a bit too elongated. That's it, really.
All in all, it's definitely a new look for Ares... but he wears it quite well. He definitely looks like a super-confident, demon-slaying bada** here, which is great, given that that's what he is.
