Description
I don't have much say about this one at this time, except that I didn't light this one perfectly; the sword aura came after all the shading was in place, so I had to improvise the best I could. I chose not to make the hair shiny on this one; the white highlights just didn't look good on this one, in my opinion. This CG was more of an experiment for me than anything, to use some purer cel shading. Thanks for looking! Enjoy! Comments and favorites are very much appreciated.

Nice. You seem to use blue in a lot of your pictures. Is that perhaps one of your favourite colours? It's one of mine. ^^
I'm not too familiar with cell shading but the sword aura actually looks really good. I like his hair, too, and especially the details in his face.
I read your comment about "Who's Line..." that's actually a really funny show. I wish I could do a skit on there but I'm far too shy for things like that.

Thanks! Yup, blue is my favorite color. Now that I look back, his face really isn't that detailed compared to my newer stuff, though. My faces are looking a lot better on my new sketches like "+1 Man Point".
Too shy on the internet? The crowd I do that stuff with is really adaptable, and can end up going off on some pretty interesting tangents as soon as somebody tosses in a wall to bounce off of. You're welcome to try and toss something into my shoutbox any time. What could go wrong?

Haha cool. Practise makes perfect, right? Lol.
And actually I think I'm a bit more confident on the internet than in real life. It's more of a sharing inhibition that stops me from engaging in art clubs and that sort. I keep telling myself people aren't going to like what I submit and then I usually end up not posting it. I've had it for quite sometime and no idea where it stemmed from. I'm actually fairly quiet in real life. Like that whole senario of before, I would have never done that in real life. I'd think about it, but probably wouldn't say anything.

But I'm more in my element offline. Trolls can't hide behind their monitors anymore. And thinking on my feet is more of my thing than taking the time to compose a reply.

Haha nice. Yea, I wish I was that confident. I used to be but some unfortunate experiences led to a drastic lack in self-esteem and well, let's just say I'm mostly quiet unless I'm made to feel dumb or someone really seriously hurts me.

A wonderful picture! I love your coloring on this piece, it's amazing! The aura looks great!
I might suggest, however, a few little nit picky things. His right (our left) eye is slightly too small in my opinion. The folds for his left leg are too sharp/simple. Also his right (our left) arm is really short. I'm assuming his arm is bent backwards, but if so that would mean that his shoulder is kinda wonky.
I love his hair, it looks great!
Keep up the amazing work!

Thanks for the critique! I can definitely see what you mean about the arm; his shoulder looks rather pointy, now that I look at it again.

Thanks for the favorite! That sword was a lot of fun to design. I get a lot of my weapon inspiration from Bleach, too.

Oooooh. That background really does look like ice shattering. And of course, Aomaru looks so great in color... I think the lighting is fine. I really like the way you did his hair.

Thanks for the favorite! I was hoping you'd like this one. The hair was a lot of fun to CG on this one, as was the background.
With all this improvising that I do on backgrounds like this, maybe I should go on "Whose Line is It Anyway?". (I still wish I had more imagination for scenery that needs to be planned, like manga settings, though.
)

^___^ Well, I think your improvised backgrounds work wonderfully for your character CGs, particularly as it is a fantasy manga that the characters spring from. It's always good to work on backgrounds-- they're a big weakness of mine too-- but I think tackling them as they come along, you'll gradually improve. And you can always just go out and sketch scenery or buildings as you feel is needed for some practice.

VERY nice work here, Blanke-kun. This whole picture has a very "icy" feel to it, which is obviously what you were going for.
That background is just grand... I dunno how you achieved this effect, but it looks like a combination of whole ice, partially cracked ice, and shattered ice shards. For that matter, the entire piece somewhat gives the impression that Aomaru is bursting through a background layer of crystalline water. (Yes, I said crystalline water... I didn't want to say "ice" so many times in a row... XD ) The overall effect is, of course, awesome.
Great work there!
MAJOR kudos on that sword there. The shading effects make it look twice as pwnish as it did in the lineart, which is really saying something. ^_^ Also, I'm noticing a big step forward here in your blade-making skills. Previously, your blades had a tendency to look too rounded and dull... but this blade has a very nice transition from dark to light as its substance approaches the blade... and as a result, Aomaru's sword (all three parts of it) looks VERY SHARP. That's some great progress right there, Blanke-kun. And I'll tell ya... improvisation must be your forte, because I'd be hard-pressed to point out a sword aura that I like better than this one. It has a blue and misty feel, yet at the same time, it goes from dark to light as it goes upward, and it isn't symmetrical by any means... really, it gives the impression of a blue flame. THAT, my friend, is just plain AWESOME.
I'd have to agree with you that white, "shiny" highlights on the hair would seem out of place here. In here, Aomaru looks more "bright" than "shiny"... if that makes any sense. XD But as for the hair, I think you just did a great job with it. As I've said, it does look very bright... yet not shiny. I can't entirely describe the impression it gives... but I will say that it looks very natural... and "cool" in both senses of the term, as well. I'd recommend trying to expand on whatever style you used to shade and color Aomaru's hair here... whatever it is, it's working like a charm.
I probably wouldn't have noticed this if El hadn't so kindly pointed it out, but the shading on Aomaru's face does indeed look quite natural. It really fits with the overall look here... it's not shiny by any means, but still "bright." Really, it perfectly reflects the lighting situation here. Again, I must harken back to all that ice in the background... I don't know how you did it, but Aomaru and the shading on him really give the impression that he's in the midst of some sort of icy locale.
I didn't notice this in the lineart, so I'll just make this my one tiny critique for this post. Aomaru's right arm (his right, your left) looks a tad shorter than his left. That may just be a trick of the angles, though... I know he has to bend that arm at the elbow a bit to strike that pose.
(That pose which PWNS, by the way.)
And on to the little things that I love to talk about so much... I think you've done a great job with Aomaru's expression here. Really, it perfectly complements the setting/background... it's determined and steadfast, yet also cool and calm... quite symbolic of ice, if you ask me. Also, I'd REALLY like to see a side shot of those shoes in another CG. I dunno what it is they're made of or how they were made, but they look awesome. I wish I had a pair... D: Hehe, I just want to see what they look like as a whole, I guess, 'cause right now I can only see the toe portion.
(That's not a complaint, mind. The shoes look great here... as you can tell by my comments...
)
I've rambled enough! Overall: Excellent. Simply excellent. The character and background work perfectly together, and the awesome factor here has been turned up all the way to eleven. Keep it up, Blanke-kun!

Whoah... I'm . . . OK. I think I survived that tsunami of text somehow... Y e a h. Yes. I'm fine. I just have to find my glasses.... There.
Thanks for the favorite! I'm glad you got so much out of this one. I'm certainly going to use this sort of style more often, and I noticed that I do indeed seem to do much better at improvising than I'd think. ^^:
As for that right arm, you are correct. That's just a matter of how I angled him here. He's standing at a slight 3/4 angle; notice that he's not coming straight at the camera.

Damn. I wish I had as much time as you to work out stuff like this. T_T
Anyways, I will say I really like the color choice on this one. The picture indeed looks *cold*
I also like a lot the way you shaded his face; it looks more ehrm...well, natural than that in the rest of your pics. The hair looks nicely colored as well though, I must say, the horsetail looks -at first glance- as if it wasn't pasrt of the hair. I thought it was just me but my sister gave the same opinion
What truly impresses me though, is what you did to the sword. That's one nice effect, though I have no idea-yet again-of what did you use in there.
I will close now, I wanna leave something for Dras to comment on (he does way better comments than me anyways). Let me say that this one looks like a potential advqnce in your skills. Kudos!
