Blanke — Pretty Tough

Description I redesigned Terra a bit. The title is a pun, because she's tougher than you'd think by looking at her. The operative phrase for her would be "Damsel, no distress." I know she doesn't exactly look like somebody whose punch could derail an oncoming train, but she's not helpless, either. I cropped out her feet so it would fit a good 8 X 10 ratio here, but I did actually draw the feet on her.

It's been rumored that she beat Ares in a sparring match once, when she forgot to wear shorts under her skirt.

Her operative phrase is good. It matches her. Her new design is great.

Yeah, I know how that goes, for some characters their redesign pops up just as soon as you wipe all the dost off of them.

Ah, very nice! I'm liking the look of the redesign so far. Looks like Terra has a few more darker tones this time around, which is quite good in my book. Although the previous design featured a ton of light tones, presumably for the purpose of displaying Terra's purity, the overall look was a tad bit bland. The addition of some darker tones and new features helps to counterbalance this, and thus give Terra a few new levels of detail.

I notice that, like all Blanke 2.0 creations, Terra's eyes are smaller than they have been in the past. I think it's a good move; your characters are steadily beginning to look more mature, and hence more unique and interesting. I also like the new floral pattern on Terra's outfit. I worry that it might eventually become a pain to redraw, but I'm not an artist, so I wouldn't know. Regardless, I'm very glad to see SOME sort of pattern on her clothes - it makes her much more interesting to look at, since patterns are more interesting than plain white. Also, I love that little collar she has now. It's just a nice extra touch that helps those regions of bare skin not be too boring.

Also, I really like the new accessories that Terra's wearing. Namely, I'm talking about the gloves, the hair ring thingy, the belt, and the leg ring. They all provide a bit of detail in places where Terra was sorely lacking it previously. Her hands are now more well-defined, her hair feels like it has more of a constant shape, there is now a clear line separating her top from her skirt that isn't simply a drawn clothing fold, and the brace helps to give a bit of "weight" to her legs, if that makes any sense. Point is, characters should be simple, but not so simple as to look plain - I think you've managed to put in some very nice features here, Blanke. Terra looks much better now.

'Course, there are still a few bugs to work out. First off, judging by the appearance of Terra's bellybutton, I'd say that Terra's top is rather tight. That doesn't make much sense, given that the top seems to be inherently attached to the skirt. Plus, her belt seems rather loose, so there isn't any feasible way that it could be keeping that material that tightly stretched across her skin. I'm all for fanservice, but I'd say we save the bellybutton for special occasions. It'll be one less stroke for you to draw, anyway.

Also, I really think that Terra's skirt needs to be lengthened. I know, I know, I say this stuff all the time, but hear me out. As you've said, Terra wears shorts under her skirt for the purpose of modesty, correct? It's just one of Terra's personality traits. Well, as short as that skirt is, anything she'd be wearing underneath would have to be indistinguishable from panties anyway. Now, I realize that we can't just lower the skirt to her ankles - she IS a fighter, so a very long skirt makes no logical sense. I'm just saying bring it down a tad; perhaps bring it to a point halfway between where the skirt ends now and where that little leg ring is. And while I'm on the subject of the skirt, make sure you give it the same, darker tone as the rest of Terra's outfit - Terra now has a good bit of those tones up top, but her very fair-colored legs counter that, so she'll look off-balance and topheavy if she doesn't get a wee bit more darkness down below. [In before jokes about "topheavy." ]

Finally, the heels. Yeah, I know, they aren't actually in the picture, but you DID mention them. Now, don't get me wrong; I DO believe that heels impart a certain sort of elegance - and at times, deadliness - that is quite attractive and awesome simultaneously. However, I know Terra; she's a very practically-minded girl. That's why she wears shorts under that skirt, since she KNOWS it's gonna fly up eventually. As such, I really can't imagine Terra wearing heels in Magna-Core. Go find some random girl who's ever worn heels and ask them how they feel to walk in. I can almost guarantee you that they'll tell you that heels are BRUTAL for walking. I mean, they are a PAIN to walk in. And given that Terra and Jason will be doing a lot of travelling in Magna-Core, and the Roflcopter hasn't been invented yet, that means they'll be doing a lot of walking. A LOT of walking. Terra, the smart girl that she is, wouldn't want to walk around the whole darned world in heels, even if they are there to give her kicks more punch. I know, I know, you see the "deadly heels" thing so much in movies - spikes in the heels, heels used to kick people hard, et cetera... but sadly, it just doesn't work like that. They're a pain to walk in, a pain to move in, and I can't even IMAGINE how hard it would be to jump and perform acrobatics in those things. So, as much as I like heels, I'm going to have to ask that Terra utilize another form of footwear.

Complaints aside, I'm loving Terra's new design. She's still a fairly simple design, but far less plain than her previous iteration. Her panels should be a lot more fun from now on, and I'm wholeheartedly looking forward to seeing her in this style in Magna-Core. Keep up the good work, Blanke-sama!

Thanks for the strategic insights, Tactician Dras. Your analysis is always appreciated before I march onwards to victory.

I can see what you mena about heels, now that you mention it. They weren't really high, more like boots with an extra half inch block on the heel. But, I'll try and figure something out there.

As for skirt, I'll figure out an appropriate length by the time she changes into this in the comic.

Yeah, I really wasn't going for anything too complex, just less plain. She's not really too showy or fussy, after all, just clean and straightforward.

Any chance of that fight appearing in the comic?

By the way, regarding your new Terra design. I think you've really come along quite well with Blanke 2.0. She's more proportionate and less like one of the human characters from Pokemon. Not too keen about her new shurikens, but hey, still need to see how she can make it work. Anyway, kudos on the newly developed mature look. Looking forward to what Skye and Null look like.

Good to seee some results showing up.

That's not a shuriken, though. It's just a sparkle because she has a point. (But I see how you can see that, then tie it in wit h the 4-point flower pattern, and the side pouch. It's clearer in color. . . )
