Description
--Head: Draw a circle, then change the front end accordingly.-Mare (Normal): I stay inside the circle, curve in to make the nose, then curve back up and reconnect the line to the original circle.
-Colt (Normal): I would try extending the circle to a teardrop shape, the point being where you want the nose to face, then erase the point and keep erasing until you get the length you want, and flat cap the opening.
-Mare (Slim): When drawing the nose, it should be like the normal mare, but slightly longer, and just slightly flatter on the end.
-Colt (Strong): Honestly I got nothin on this one XD
--Body: Extend a line from the back of the head, imagine this is the spine, and draw it out according to the pose you want your drawing to be. Then, make a second line at the bottom of the circle, and try to replicate the curves you did on the top line, then connect the 2 lines with a semi circle at the end to make the flank.
-I've been told that colts are generally a bit longer bodied than mares, though I don't really follow that rule myself.
--Hooves: Generally the base of the hoof is thinner than the tip, bit how much thinner is all a matter of preference.
-Hindlegs: Starting at the flank, draw a teardrop, the point facing around where you want the front end of the tip of the hoof to be. Erase the tip, and a bit past the tip, then curve the back line away from the body until you hit around where the line would be without the hindleg joint divot, then curve the line downward and draw the rest of the hoof.
-Forelegs: Draw this the way you drew the body, draw the front line in the shape you want the hoof to be, then mimic with the back line, but connect these lines with a much less round (but not completely flat) cap.
--Facial Features: This is mostly a matter of preference, so I can't help much here, but I'll try.
-Eyes: Usually more rounded eyes & short, straight eyelashes show masculinity, while more pointed eyes with longer, curved lashes show femininity. When I draw colts, I usually dont include the eyelashes at all.
-Mouth: A simple curved line will work fine for an expression, but if the mouth is open, the stroke should be a bit closer to the center than the stroke of the rest of the head, to show concavity
-Ears: Total preference. Generally in the shape of a rounded triangle.
--Unique Features: This is mostly trial and error work, but dont be so quick to give up if you're getting alot of error.
-Mane: Just imagine what you want the mane to look like and go with the flow, making adjustments as you see fit. There's no real set way to do this, unless you want instructions for a specific pony, but even then there are many ways to do it.
-Tail: Same as mane, but it does help to draw a line in the middle to visualize how you want the tail to curve, and draw the tail from the middle outwards.
-Horn: Just a simple cone shape with a round top cap. Normal unicorns usually have 3 visible riflings (spiraled lines) on their horns.
-Wings: Honestly, I do my own style of wings now that I can't really describe, so srry about that "^.^
Remember that everyone has their own style, and if something doesn't look right to you, feel free to change it. This is just how I draw, and hopefully this tutorial helps you find a way to draw that YOU feel comfortable with. I realize that some parts of the detailed tutorial aren't explained visually, but I'm working on those. I just wanted to get the essentials out quickly. Sorry if this is a sucky guide, but I hope it helps at least a little bit for any other new artists in need of some help "^.^
